What does hot oil treatments do for your hair and how often do you apply them? Do you apply before shampoo and deep conditioning or vice verse, do some people ever use them overnite?

In my experience, it has made my hair more supple and silky. IF you do a search for the Oil Rinse thread, started by Sareca, its a method that is basically a type of hot oil treatment. You will learn quite a bit on what it can do for your hair. I will always use them from now on. Good luck on your quest for knowledge.

My UBH deep conditioner already has oils in it...so its like a 2in1. While I am under the dryer I am deep conditioning as well as getting a hot oil treatment at the same time.
The purpose of hot oil treatments is to lubricate and preserve your hair,afterall its hair fibers...you have to keep it preserved to help keep your hair from being brittle/crunchy. (it also keeps it healthy...atleast in my experiences
)!

I use it as a pre-poo on wash days, which is usually once a week.

I usually use them as a pre poo so they just keep my hair from being dried out completely by shampoo. Now that I'm cleaning with mud I am starting to use oils with a mix of Ayurvedic oils. I've only done this once. I'm not sure what it's doing yet because it's too soon.

I do them overnight before shampooing to nourish my hair and keep it from being stripped. Technically, I'm usually too lazy to warm the oil up so it's more like an oil treatment/prepoo. I shampoo every four days so I do them twice a week. It's convenient because I can't stand oil or anything heavy in my hair so doing them before shampooing allows me to have nourished but clean hair. I have been using red palm oil but I may be switching to coconut oil soon. Red palm oil stains everything and is a pain to wash out.
