Hooking Braid Extensions on to the Head

I'm really confused about how to do this. Some taught me once, but I can't seem to do it anymore. I am trying to redo some of the braids I have because they are getting loose. I can braid fine, but I can't seem to hook the fake hair on to the natural hair. Whenever I start braiding, it just slips down. Do you tie the fake hair on to the base? Is it looped around? Help?
