I bought a Clairol box for the whole head but I want an Herbal essence comp because I aonly want streaks. How can I do this at home and get even streaks?

I bought the Herbal Essence highlighter compact and took it back because I called the toll free number on the container and asked them if these highlights will work on black or dark hair. And the Herbal Essence representative told me they don't work and won't really show up on your hair so it might be a waste of money. He suggest I get highlights professionally done instead of using home highlighter kits.
