I finally got my breakage under control and found products that my hair likes..but over the past week or so, my hair has gone from soft and managable, to brittle, crusty OILY strands of straw. I have not been doing anything differently than I was ever doing but nothing seems able to penetrate my hair and keep it moist. My ends which weren't so bad have gotten severely dry and there is nothing left for me to do but cut my hair when I get my next touch up. As for the rest, I have CO washed, used the products I know to offer good moisturizing, sealed in the oils, did acv rinses, clarified, limited the amount of products and daily wettings/mistings....nothing is helping. I have been stressed and I'm wondering if this is causing it, but I thought stress caused hair loss, not hair dryness. I know this post is hectic and may not make sense but PLEASE help....I don't know what else to do

Also, my typical routine is wash alternating CON and Elasta QP creme conditioning condition each wash, twice a week, about twice a week, CO wash with whatever i pick up...follow with Frizz Ease leave in spray( sometimes I replace this with profectiv breakfree), coconut oil and jojoba oil and EVOO on the ends. Sometimes I just use mango butter in place of the leave ins....does anything sound bad? Am I using too many products?

Check your conditioners to make sure they don't have a lot of protein in them. When you said brittle, my first thought was too much protein going on your hair. What kind of moisturing conditioners are you using? I saw you mentioned protectiv breakfree, which is a good one. The rest are oils. You may just need more moisture in your regime, using those oils to seal it in.

My conditioner after washing is Humectress moisturizing conditioner. It has a little bit of protein but mostly moisturizing ingredients. There are other brands like this too which may help your hair. Do you use hert? Please hold off on cutting your ends - you may not need to.

Isis, i think you may be right, when I washed my hair this past weekend, I used hair mayo, then used a placental protein treatment leave in. Alot of my products have wheat proteins in it. and Mermaid, yes, EVOO seems to be making things worse right now, it's not really drying it out, but it's making it greasy on top on its already dryness.....how should I combat all this????

P.S. I used profectiv root health for my new growth and megagrowth for my ends...all hell broke loose with dryness and stickiness

CheerBear-

Why dont you slowly eliminate one product from your regimen and see how your hair feels. I would deep condtion with a very mositurizing conditioner and then choice ONE oil or ONE leave in product. Then see how it turns out..keep us posted!

The ones in the little vials? IIRC most of them have rubbing alcohol in them.

Hask does. Smooth n Shine doesn't. I'm not sure about the others... I know a lot of people use them with success, but they wreaked havoc on my relaxed hair. No matter what I used afterwards, my hair looked and felt like straw for several days.

Have you tried ditching the CON for awhile? I noticed when using this over a period of time that my hair felt kinda dry and felt that way no matter what I did. It also felt this way even when alternating shampoo's.

Sassy, it was the ones in the vials by Hask,Glory, yes I do but not as much over the past couple days. Honi, I just started using CON again. Although, my hair always reacts nagatively to it before it starts working..the first time I ever used it I got two big handfuls worth of shedding and dryness for about a week...

I moisturize my ends with oil every night and sometimes when I wake up in the morning. Have you considered a serum or glossing polish? How do you dry your hair...blowdry, airdry, or hooded-dryer?

Anky, it could be but I have to shampoo(reg. and clarify) often because i get buildup really easily and my scalp is always flaky.
Poohbear, I actually just did start thinking about Serum, I'm going to pick up one next time I go shopping and I airdry typically, but I have blowdried my hair twice this week

Blowdrying too much can dry out your hair as well...know it from experience...and it makes it poofy and hard to manage

Is the coconut oil your are using refined or unrefined. I found that refine coconut makes my hair very dry and brittle. The less products you use, the better. I also found that some combinations of products were making my hair have that dry brittle feeling. Try limiting what you are using to narrow the problem down.
