Henna question

How are the premixed Henna kits in boxes? I've seen henna dyes in boxes at Wholefood market. They come in a box just like the regular hair dyes do. Are they the same as the Henna that you Henna gurus order in the bags? Thanks.

Nope.

Henna dyes/mixes are not the same as pure henna. The only color you can get from pure henna, by itself, is red or a variation thereof. Many times the henna dyes/mixes that have names like "black henna" or "brown henna" are mixed with harmful chemicals in order to get that color.

I suggest you go to mehandi.com and download the free e-booklet that will tell you all about henna. There's also a long henna thread here as well as on naturallycurly.com.

Hope this helps.

They are not the same. Just make sure, if you're relaxed that you use the Body Art Quality Henna. I agree, to be on the safe side, visit Mehandi.com so you can learn a little more. The boxed dyes have metals other chemicals and are not pure.

You're welcome. I think once you look at the site (and read up on it) you'll be surprised in how healthy it is for your hair. Not to mention the many, many threads out here on the subject. You should do an advanced search here as well to get some tips. I did my first Henna/Indigo last week and I am absolutely in love with the color, the texture and the shine. Far superior than bottled color IMO. And I had a lot of grey to try to cover. It worked wonders. It was easy to rinse out (I used cheap conditioner). And it gives you da' bling. The color released fine. It was easy to make. Easy to apply. And it was a smooth process. Not messy at all. Although you have to leave it on awhile if you are trying to get color and not just using it to condition. Hope you try it. :)

There was a post about a week ago about Karishma Henna. It seems everyone who uses it loooooves it. I just ordered some and will try it out after my next relaxer.

I have used some of the hennas at Whole Foods and they made my hair dry. But that was before I found out about adding stuff like shea butter, conditioner etc. to it.

I found the Karishma Henna at a local Indian grocer for $2.99. I tried it last week and it was great! I have a beautiful hint of red in my hair, and its much shinier and stronger.

I have been hearing good things about this brand. When I finally decide to henna I think I will use this one. Did you add anything else to the mixture besides water? Was it easy to rinse out?

TIA!

I bought some Karishma from Ruchita Ayurveda, plan to try it this weekend. Indian henna is the only one I would trust in the box (from the Indian grocer). I also tried Reshma in the box and liked it (Indian). Can't wait to try the Karishma! Until now the only henna I used was what I ordered from mehandi.com (Yemeni henna). But the Karishma/Reshma is way cheaper. I swear Karishma has RAVE reviews all over the internet.

I followed CurlyNikki's mix, so I mixed the henna with brewed green tea, and a little bit of honey. Applied to clarified hair, and slept in it overnight. Rinsed, DC'ed, and then cowashed.

It rinsed out really easily too, which was a big plus.
