The center, back of my head is extremely dry. It always has been and this is where it usually breaks. (This is what inspired me to cut my hair short this last time.) Now that I've come to the board, it has become really thick there as well. It's also grown about 2 to 3 inches and now I am becoming really nervous. I don't want it to break again. I am oiling my ends every other night and I am using a little S Curl there since I am wearing a phonytail. Is this enough? What else can I do to maintain this desert in the back of my head? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem in the back except my back is thin. This is a very delicate area for me. So I am going to be extra gentle. I am going to continue to do daily conditioner washes and once weekly do a deep coditioning in this area.

I am in braids but I took the braids out of the kitchen area to give it a little extra TLC. I have put the s-curl conditioner on the back before and it keeps it really moist. I ran out and I won't be able to buy anymore until August because of the PJ challenge going on. I lieu of the s-curl I will be using conditioner with oil added to keep it moisturized.

I think that just as long as you keep it moisturized it will be fine.

Yes just keep it moisturized. I use a spray moisturizer and for my weak areas (in the back center as well) I've been using Wild Growth Oil more on that area. It's been working for me.

What is your regimen like? Do you use heat? Have you tried pre-shampoo hot oil treatments? List your regimen and maybe someone can critique it for you and find out where your dryness is coming from. I'm going through something similar, but I contribute it to the heat even though I cut down on it. I will say that I just tried avocado oil last week and it's a great hair softener and moisturizer!!! Not to encourage any PJ activity.

O.K., here is my regimen. I have 2, an A regimen and a B regimen. I wash my hair every 5 -6 days and I alternate regimens.
A
pre shampoo hot oil treatment (30 min dryer-AB Ult Herbal Oil)
Shampoo (3 out of 4 washes are CO)
ACV rinse
protein conditioner (15 mins - hair mayo)
moisture balance condition (20 min - Aphogee)
Spray S-Curl and Motions Nourish and sometimes
Sit under dryer about 30 mins
Carrot Cream and into ponytail

B
pre shampoo hot oil treatment
CO wash
deep condition (Cholesterol 30 mins under dryer)
S-Curl and Nourish
Sit under dryer about 30 mins

I don't use any additional heat unless I really need to straighten my hair. Also, I oil my ends with carrot cream or the herbal oil every other night.

What do you guys think?

Hi butterfly7,

Are you sleeping on a satin pillow case or wearing some form of a satin covering (bonnet)on you head when you are sleeping? Another question, have you found a good moisturizing conditioner?

I think that if you are getting good results with what your already doing with your hair the old saying that comes to mind is what I would apply here "If it ain't broken don't fix it." Take deep breathe...worrying can cause hair to fallout.

If this is your 1st summer working with your hair successfully, you might want to find out what products work for summer hair based on your geo locational conditions. Hopefully the other ladies will jump in give you and me both some summer hair pointers or maybe a search on this forum might prove to be helpful.

I hope this helps, at least a little.

Peace,

Thank you so much. I have a satin bonnet, but it doesn't keep my hair smoothed the way I like it. I have been tying it with a scarf. I did find a silky scarf. Maybe I should start using it. I usually sleep flat on my back.

Yes. This is my first summer and it gets REALLY hot here in the midwest. That is something to think about. Thanks Spagirl!

When you say "moisturize" what EXACTLY do you mean? I know that's a stupid question, but maybe a true lack of understanding is my problem.

Moisturizing refers to using water and/or a water-based leave in sealed with oil, like jojoba, olive, avacado, or whatever your prefernce is. I like Distilled water, Nexxus Headdress and Keracare essential oils, especially on my ends.

Well, I spritz my hair with S-Curl at night, but not every night and not a lot. Am I not doing this enough? Doesn't sound like it to me.

In the morning I use a little avocado oil and/or jojoba oil and lightly mist with my Pantene Light Detangler and Hot Six oil mix. (My hair responds well to natural oils.) I've been also using Root Health on the new growth for the past two weeks.

At night, I use a little Profectiv Healthy Ends on the ends..mist with the Pantene/Hot Six spray and wrap with a satin wrap.

I've been either wearing braid outs or wrapping at night.

The scarf you're using...is it made of either silk or satin? Make sure..you mentioned that it was silky, but I know some materials can be made to feel silky, but can actually soak up moisture. Polyester being one of them. I used to wrap my hair with a polyester scarf because it felt silky.

I have no idea what the scarf is made of. I'm glad I didn't join your July challenge because I now have a
shopping list:

silk/satin scarf
moisturizer
moisturizer
moisturizer

Thanks Jen
