Ladies I need advice. Six weeks ago I got my touch-up with Affirm by a salon. Liked it but still had some waves..okay coils. Went to a salon yesterday with a 2pm appt. Did not get seen until 3:45pm only to be told she would not apply a relaxer because I told her I had washed my hair earlier that day. I was speechless. Moreso because of the long wait. So after trying in vain to find another stylist (no luck everyone was closing) I resigned myself to do my own relaxer. Went and bought Motions Super with oil, which is what I used prior to Affirm. My hair is coarse and thick but not as dense as I would like it and it is very dry. Which is why I switched to lye. I liked the lye but this will only be my third relaxer with lye since November. Anyway back to the washing then relaxing. The stylist had this complete look of "shock and awe" on her face when I told her that I have had salons do this before. Not lately but in the past. I came home and oiled and greased my scalp and will apply the Motions later tonight. I don't have a choice as I leave for Florida Monday for work. Any advice/comments will be greatly appreciated.

I think it is a good idea not to do much manipulation to the scalp just prio

r to a touch up. However, girl never wait that long for a stylist. I did that for many years and finally decided that my time is too valuable to be waiting all day to get my hair done. There are stylists out there that don't overbook and can devote all (or most) of their time to you as a client. Seek one out in your area. Maybe one of the ladies here knows of a good stylist in the area you'll be vacationing in so that you can at least have your hair styled.

Thanks Melodee,

I was so pissed off sitting there, because I knew I had missed the time to go somewhere else and therefore felt like I had to wait. I hope this comes out okay tonight, I will base extra good. Wish me luck.

Whoa! Elizablue!

I think you DO have a choice. 6 weeks is really not that long! Can't you just throw some s-curl on your hair and smooth back into a "phony tail" or something?

I know we all get to our own point during touch up time where we feel we just can't take the two textures anymore, but know that they tell you to wait 48 hrs for a reason when it comes to washing your hair before a relaxer.

If I even sweat before a relaxer, basing or not, my scalp is on fire when I get a touch up. You should be very careful because your pores are still open after hair washing.

How long will you be in Florida? Can you not look for a salon while you're there who could fit you in?
Do you always touch up after only 6 weeks? Have you ever done your own touch up?

Also, I really don't think mixing relaxers is such a great idea. But then, I don't know how long and healthy your hair is, so I could be wrong..

Good luck and have a safe trip!

I agree with AZ, I would not relax just yet. You should do a pre-hotoil treatment with some castor and olive oil, wash with CON, deep condition and do the S-Curl ponytail method. Many here have not had good results with the Motions Oil. You mentioned that you had some underprocessing; and take from the QUEEN of underprocessing, you do not want to go there again. Take a step back, research some relaxers on this board and then make a decision. Many seem to get great results with Mizani. I'm gonna get one next time. When I relaxed with the Affirm mild, it left my fine hair with way too many waves for my liking also. Please let us know what you decide

Thanks ladies,

Sorry, but I just got back home. Here is what happened. I really coated my scalp and hair that night with oils and conditioners. Then Sunday I had to take my daughter to the mall. Well I stumbled into a JC Penney's and let me just tell you a sister hooked my head up with the Affirm and it turned out so totally beautiful. I was amazed at all the new growth. It was silky and soft and thick. And it only cost $50.00. Since I have been doing the protective style my nape has grown tremendously. JC Penney's has my retouch business from now on. She only trimmed the ends slightly and told me my hair was very healthy. She did shun on the S-curl, but hey it works for me, so I'll keep it up. By the way there was no burning whatsoever. Thanks for all the advice, I don't know what I would do without this board.

Just curious... what did she say was bad about using S-Curl?

Thanks!!

Okay... I'm late(busy weekend)...but I recall relaxing my hair the DAY before a relaxer...and my scalp burned so bad! I remeber saying to myself "that's why they say don't shampoo before getting a relaxer...." I never did that again... My scalp was sore(no scabs...just tender) for almost 2 weeks...

Lindy,

Again I must apologize, I travel a lot and only get on the board when I'm home. I have had two stylist gasp when I told them that I use the s-curl. Actually make that 3. None of them could give me a specific reason, only that it was not meant for relaxed hair. I think it is probably more of I'm using something that they don't teach in beauty school, therefore they cannot recommend it. But it works for me.

Sweetcocoa,

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. I know that I am probably the exception to the rule, I have very thick, and very very coarse hair, so it probably only suffices that I have extra thick skin on my scalp also. I almost never burn when I get a relaxer. Which can be a bad thing because sometimes I think stylist time you by the discomfort.
