I was getting ready to do my first wash since my touch-up two weeks ago, and after i combed my hair through I passed my fingers over the roots and i realised how rough it felt compared to the older relaxed hair, as i examined the hair more closely its kinky instead of straight, how long should i wait before having it corrected? i appreciate any advice that could be useful for the situation i'm in.

Most would say at least a week or two. I would err on the side of caution and do two weeks. That would allow you the time to baby your hair in preparation for the corrective touch-up.

Den1, sorry to hear about your underprocessed hair. I had the same problem when I went to get my touchup on 7/06 after a 4 month stretch. I have the wash and wear relaxer and the girl left it on not very long. I'm not trying to get straight hair, but my hair after she was finished looked good, but then the following week it was puffy which I do not like. Sometimes I wonder if they do it on purpose so that you can keep coming back to them, or maybe they do it because they are losing money because you are stretching out the time when you put chemicals in your hair, I don't know. I decided on 8/26 to do my own chemical process and I used Silk Elements Lye relaxer in regular. Before I applied it to my hair I did a strand test and since I only wanted to release the curl just a little bit more, I kept it on for about 5 minutes. Afterwards I did the deep conditioned etc. etc and let me tell you, I love my hair! It is not straight, but the curl is released so that it blends with the rest of my hair. The puffiness is gone. Den1, I waited 6 weeks before I put chemicals back in my hair and I went over the parts that were underprocessed and it worked very well for me. This board offers so much information on self-relaxing and I just tapped into the many resources and applied their techniques and I am very pleased with the results. I have washed my hands of hairdresses, I will start doing my own chemical touchups.

to be honest..if it's manageable i'll just wait unti my next relaxer..but then again i've never done a corrective relaxer

I can't place the blame on my church sister, my head was stinging and i told her to wash out the relaxer, only parts of my hair is straight but the middle is kinky as it is the most resistant area, i think i'm going to wait until my next touch up which is 10 weeks from now. how should i care my hair in the meanwhile? how did you cope with yours for the 6 week waiting time. Presently, i just clarified with pantene, followed by CON, I reconstructed with aphogee not the smelly one. I'm just treating my hair to a rinse to take my mind off things.

that's what i was thinking, i don't have much newgrowth either, i might just wear buns for the time being..oh bwoy i'm going to get bored to death wearing that same style, but i'm concerned that too much manipulation will cause the textures to snap.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT i'M AFRAID OF. i ALREADY HAD SNAPPAGE FROM THE LAST STRETCH WHERE THE 2 TEXTURE MET RIGHT IN THE BANG AREA.

SO i'M REALLY CONSIDERING FIXING THIS.

I've decided not to stretch anymore, i have a ton of flyaways, i want to achieve healthy long strands...my touch-up from now on will be no later than 12 weeks.

Well I wore my hair in a bun and just tried to keep it moisturized with my homemade moisturising spray. I sprayed my hair every AM/PM. Fortunately, it wasn't hard to comb through and I lost very little hair when I washed it, but you could definitely see the puffiness. I just deal with it being that way until i gave myself the touchup. I also touched up my hair in sections. I parted from ear to ear and did the front first, and then the back. I thought it was going to be hard to do, but it really wasn't. When I did the front i leaned over the sink, when I did the back i jumped in the shower. After doing each section, I then did a neutralising shampoo all over and then deep conditioned.

I've heard it said that some people do a corrective relaxer around 2 weeks after your initial chemical service if your hair is underprocessed. Waiting too long to fix the problem may cause other problems like breakage, weakness etc. Maybe you can check with a professional and ask them how long you should wait before doing a corrective relaxer. I have never done one before.

Thanks for replying!!
Currently my hair at the roots isn't causing too much trouble however i'm going to leave it alone and invest in a detangler for wash days, hopefully this will get my through the next 10 weeks until touch up time.

When I had to get a corrective after being in braids for 3 months, my hair dresser made me wait the full 6 weeks (she was relaxing my hair every 6-8 back then). Then she did the corrective at my next relaxer. In the meantime (on my biweekly appts) she just pressed the roots straight with the marcel iron as she curled my wrap, but only if I was wearing a straight style. If I got it pinned up or curly she just made sure the edges were gelled down good and I went on my way.
