I am soooooo FRUSTRATED!! my daughter's hair is mostly 4b. it is constantly dry. matting, tangling and is full of single strand knots! A few days ago I cut about half an inch off because of single strand knots and guess what?? THEY ARE BACK!! I have tried so many moisturizer's, oil, Everything you can imagine! Everytime I find a product that I think work.. a couple of uses later its stop working...:wallbash::wallbash:

I bought a texure softener today that I was/am planning to use..but Is this a chemical? is it damaging to the hair? It says that its okay for 5 year to use it but I would like to know more.

I dont Think her hair will ever get long if it continues this way.

What should I do?

Just for me texture softener is a no-lye relaxer. The kit contains a base, activator and oil that is mixed together. The oil is suppose to reduce the strength of the relaxer. If you do a search, some people have reported having straight hair after using it. I dislike the way the product is marketed. It's not a "softener" it's a relaxer with oil added to it.

My opinion on the matter:

It is a relaxer.

OP, how are you styling your daughter's hair? How are you washing it?

cornrows, two strang twist, a lot of times i twist it ant then tuck it under in a soft hair rapper.. nothing is working.. I'm thinking that there is no way to avoid single strand knots in her hair..is just going to happen.. she has mostly 4b hair with a little for and and even some 3c..its a mess!

A texture softener is basically a watered-down (or in this case, oiled down) relaxer, and I wouldn't recommend using it on a five year old's sensitive scalp.

To help with tangles, however, have you tried washing her hair in plaits? My younger sister, whose hair is coily/thick beyond all get out 4a/4b used to get knots on the end of her hair all the time; washing, conditioning, and partially airdrying in braids helps tremendously.
What I do is dampen her hair before washing, apply EVOO, and a cheap leave in, detangle with a wide tooth, sectioning hair and braiding as I go along. I then wash her hair in the braids, condition, then airdry to about 75%. I then remove the braids, lightly comb the hair, and put a rubberband or hairball on the section of hair before twisting and putting barrettes on the ends. Her hair takes almost no time to do, she has virtually no knots and the style lasts a week.

Blowdrying every once in a while may help too.

Echoing the above post...

My sister is a 4b and we HAVE to wash her hair in plaits. She has even started doing it herself because it makes her hair sooo much more manageable. She NEVER EVER has her hair loose, unless it is blown dry (and then it is done in sections). We never have to deal with SSKs.

For her, cheapie conditioner should be your best friend. And yes, that is a relaxer you bought.

I agree with washing the hair in twists or plaits. Getting rid of the shed hairs. Oil rinsing also has helped me a lot with knots. I think some knots are normal, however.
