Help. I love the results of shikakai and amla but they are hard as heck to remove for me. I am going to try Lakshmi's suggestion - soaking them out in the tub. However, I wonder if I am making an application mistake. I currently mix them with EVOO, pectin and water and apply it completely to each strand. Should I only appy it to my scalp??????

Why are you adding pectin? That would make it thicker, and much harder to get out of your hair. I used a paste of just herbs & water last night, and I was able to rinse it out of my two strand twists in about 10-15 minutes - It would have taken less time in loose hair......

Do you have trouble getting it out? If no, what is your mixture?

Well, first I just use water, I may try EVOO with it later. I also experimented with the each powder separately before I mixed the two. The Shikakai is very grainy and is hard getting out, I rinse for about 15 minutes, parting as I go and just let the water hit each section. The Alma Powder is not grainy at all and rinses clean.

So, on days when I know I do not have time to rinse that long, I just use the Alma powder alone or with just a little Shikakai...it has similar astringent properties has Shikakai, but just not as cleansing.

Powder or the oils? If powder, I use Sareca's oil mix:

1/4 package Powder (= 1/4 cp for me - my hair is thinner so I used less powder)
1/2 cp EVOO
1/2 cp of other eo's (jojoba, rosemary, thyme, grapeseed, etc)

Put in crock pot and let simmer 4 hrs to overnight - strain, strain and strain some more through coffee filters, cheesecloth, or something similar.

Put in oil bottle and massage in...I let mine sit on for about an hour.

I did not have any problems rinsing and did not notice particples...though when I originally used a 1/2 cp of powders it took a little longer to rinse.

If you're using powders, are you straining?

I add pectin because it makes the mixture more gel like and less messy. I see the issue. 10-15 minutes or even 8-9 minutes is a long time for me. I am used to (pre-Indian) very quickly rinsing my henna. Thanks for the input.
