HELP my natural hair is sooooooooo dry!

Despite cowashing about 3-4 times a week lately my hair has been looking and feeling very dry, I'm a 4a natural and I got my hair colored about 4 months ago, I know the color probably have something to do with it, but I need a solution. I deep condition once per week, but I think I need a great daily moisturizer (please recommend one). How can I get my hair to retain more moisture?

Very cute in your siggy :)

for me usually when my hair is having trouble to retain moisture i need to clarify. ACV does it for me ...but as far as deep conditioners go I personally swear by salerm wheat germ

this moisturizes my hair quite well. as far as daily moisturizers go if your co-washing that much i am not sure what your problem is, for me light conditioners such as Vo5 work just as well as anything else for daily moisture

hope this helps

Okay first off, what products are you using? What are you cowashing with? I've found that my hair does not like cowashing. And it certainly doesn't like those cheapie conditioners. They make my hair feel like hay. It's like it's constantly being rinsed and left to air dry with no products. That's how bad it felt.

I found that my hair stayed soft once I started washing with a moisturizing shampoo and dcing once a week. I don't apply any moisturizer or oil or anything through the week.

Do you use shampoo at all? What are you dcing with? Have you tried dcing overnight?

Love, love this shea butter leave-in repair cream by Cantu! I leave it on overnight or just as a leave-in after co-washing. Co-washing definitely works for me and I use VO5 Kiwi Lime, which is a clarifying condish. HTH

Good questions and I was gonna say that CW'ing that much doesnt work for everyone and could actually be the culprit

I was also gonna suggest overnight natural oils/butters and DC'ing:yep:

Ditto on Cantu. I use it as an overnight DC. I also love SheaMoisture, which I use instead of leaving condish in after a wash.

It sounds like you're wetting your hair often, but you aren't doing anything to keep that moisture in your hair once it dries. IMO water is the best moisturizer, but it also evaporates - which can leave hair feeling dry. Have you tried putting a sealer like castor oil or coconut oil on your hair while it's still damp?

I like to layer a creamy leave in on damp hair and seal with a light covering of oil before I detangle and that keeps my hair moist for a few days at a time.

three words- natural shea butter.

I will never have to worry about my fav moisturizer being discontinued. I love this stuff, esp sealed with jojoba oil.

in addition to that:

do you have hard water, you may need to use a chelating poo
or product buildup, you may need to clarify
check your products for cones
make sure you are drinking enough water and getting enough EFA's in your diet

My all time dry-hair fix is a shampoo and DC. Afterwards I use a combo of Profectiv Break-Free and Elasta QP mango butter to moisturize.

I moisturize with coconut oil and mango butter daily til the next wash.

Works every time for me.

I've been doing this for the past few days and I've found it to work.

My hair LOVES Pantene Conditioners and I tend to co-wash my hair 2x/day.

When my hair is feeling really dry I get my Pantene Relaxed and Natural Conditioner (Intensive Moisturizing) one and place a generous amount in a bowl. I then get 100% coconut milk (the kind that kinda thick and you can see the fat settled on the top) and I slowly add to the bowl while mixing. The mix will start to thicken.

I then place my hair in chunky twist and slather on this mixture 1 twist at a time. Making sure that my roots all the way to the tip is nicely coated. I then place a plastic cap over my heat and sit with this mix for about 1-2hrs. It will drip, so I place a small towel around my neck and wipe accordingly. I then rinse hair with cool water untwisting and retwisting to make sure any excess mix has been removed.

I lightly tee-shirt dry. At this point your hair should feel nice and soft and coated. I then add a little more of my essential oils and some unrefined shea to my ends 1 twist at a time. Retwist, and place hair in bantu knot. Once entired head is down, I cover w/ a scarf and go to bed.

In the morning, my hair is nice and soft and maintains this t/o the day.

HTHs......

Thanks ladies so much for all your replies....

Glam I'm cowashing w/ cheapy conditioners mostly, I shampoo every week, but I haven't calrified in awhile so that may be the culprit. I'll be doing a baking soda clarifying rinse shortly.

Shtow, I keep on hearing great things about shea butter, where are you ordering yours?

I actually got the cantu shea butter leave in recently, but I haven't triedm it enough to have an opinion yet.

One thing that you ladies brought up that I lack in my regimen is oil. I'm going to start sealing w/ oil from now on.
