Hi, ladies, I keep hearing about all these hair oils you guys are using. I already have thick hair, and a bit of hair breakage (considered healthy cause it's coming from the root; I would like to minimize that breakage though). I want my hair to grow a lot more (I am currently at SL; goal is BSL). My scalp gets dry pretty fast, but I have no dandruff. And my ends tend to get a little dry.

I think I wanna go with coconut oil, but when do you use it...before a wash & condition or after (or both)? Do you use it on your scalp and/or your hair? Do you add any other oils to it?

So, what do you suggest; what do you use?

Thanks

I have recently begun using coconut oil as a sealant after I apply my moisturizer also after I straighten my hair. You can use it as a prepoo before you wash your hair (you can heat it in the microwave a little bit to do a hot oil treatment) or use it to seal and hydrate your hair.

I love my coconut oil, its very light and the scent is nice too. I recently added jojoba oil to it in attempts to get rid of the jojoba oil and because i was bored.... don't do it! Its way too heavy now I wish I would have just left it alone.

my hair prefer jojoba or castor oil to coconut oil. But Almond oil, avocado oil, Amla oil, Vatika oil, Sesame Oil are all oils that are worth a good look at. If your hair tolerates oils well- mine doesnt, Coconut oil, Castor and Vatika oils are getting all the raves. If you are going to apply the oil to your scalp too- try to avoid a mixture that has mineral oil only because it can coat the pores of the scalp. If you are just using it on your hair- then any oil that helps you retain moisture is the way to go. For me oils don't moisturize I use them to keep moisture. So I apply only on damp hair.

I like EVOO( extra virgin olive oil) I mix it with Elasta QP DPR and leave it on my head overnight and wash out in the morning. Or I may use it alone as a hot oil treatment b4 washing.

I use coconut oil, evoo, and soy oil.

I use coconut oil in a pre poo, as a sealant, and I recently started mixing it in my relaxer.

The evoo and soy oil are use for pre poo's and mixed with my deep conditioner.

I tried the castor oil , and had an allergic reaction. My skin is really sensitive, so I try one oil at a time.

I absolutely LOVE using coconut oil after a cowash, and had neglected jojoba oil, simply because I didn't know how to use it. Then I read this:

Skin care
Natural jojoba oil serves as an excellent moisturizing agent with exceptional spread. The lubrication properties leave a rich velvety non-oily feel on the skin, while retarding water loss and enhancing the flexibility and suppleness of the skin.

Jojoba is completely miscible with the natural sebum of the skin, and when used on the skin forms a very thin, non-greasy lipoid layer.
This layer is partially porous and provides exceptional trans-epidermal respiration and moisture control. Unlike greasy occlusive materials such as petrolatum, mineral oils and some lanolin products, jojoba oil provides an absolutely non-tacky, non-oily and non-greasy, dry softening to the skin.
It also significantly reduces trans-epidermal water loss, without totally blocking the transpiration of gases and water vapor. The kinking of jojoba’s “cis” configuration helps to avoid the tight packing of hydrocarbon chains, thereby preventing this water-loss function.

Hair care
Jojoba is an extremely functional ingredient in hair and scalp preparations and many scalp related problems are caused by a hardened build-up of sebum that clogs the hair follicles and may cause some types of scaling.
If this hardened build-up is not removed, it can eventually obstruct the hair follicle's ability to function properly, which can lead to a loss of the hair shaft, and ultimately, death of the follicle.

Jojoba rapidly penetrates down to the scalp and hair shaft, and readily loosens and dissolves this hardened build-up. The scalp and hair follicles are left clean and free to continue their normal function. It is also an excellent soil-dissolving agent, which can remove sticky build-up on the hair from many modern hair preparations, as well as airborne particulates.

Jojoba will leave the hair clean and supple. Jojoba exhibits a matchless keratoplastic effect that leaves the hair shimmering and brings out the hair's natural color overtones and brilliance, and a periodic treatment with jojoba oil, massaged into the scalp and hair, and then left to do its work, can make a vast difference to the quality of your hair as well as the health of your scalp.

Needless to say, I'm using MORE jojoba oil!

:goodone:Thats why I use it- Good research Moroni!!!
Oh and technically Jojoba oil is a wax( and a very good one)- that why it needs no other sealant. There is NO buildup

Thanks ladies. But Moroni, do you use the jojoba instead of the coconut oil, or along with it? And does it way your hair down like the other lady said, or do you just have to know how to use it?

:look:

Girl get you some coconut oil

You can prepoo with it. You can DC with it. You can oil rinse with it. You can use it as a leave in. You can use a lil bit when you blowdry (I dont care who says you cant). You can use it on your hair so it doesnt revert after you straighten. You can use it to seal your ends at night. You can use it on your scalp. You can put it on your skin when it itches, when you have a rash, when you just want to moisturize out of the shower, and when you want your face to glow the next morning. Is there anything coconut oil won't do?

Basically, Im obsessed with some coconut oil, lol... :drunk:
