Saturday I washed, dc'd and loose air dryed (YES I KNOW THAT WAS A BIG MISTAKE)

My hair shrunk up and became super dry even though I left a lil conditioner and added leaving before air drying.

Yesterday I put some EVCO on it and my hair seemed ok.

Today Im at work and Im noticing a LOT of breakage. I ran my fingers through the back of my hair and there is a section where my hair is brittle and broken.

What can I do to baby my hair when I get home? There are some sections that feel perfectly fine but then I have random dry sections.
I know ppl think of EVCO as a moisturizer but does it act like a protein to some ppl? I've noticed that sometimes it makes my hair a little hard.

I'm thinking maybe I can go home and slather care free curl activator/moisturizer and some deep conditioner on for a few hours and try wash and blow drying.

Any suggestions? I just grew back my hair (and it was in a healthy state) from getting it cut in November. I don't want to loose the 2 inches I grew.

I don't know about the EVCO, but what has helped my dry hair is:

s-curl, then sealing BY SECTIONS using castor oil!

I have thick, dense, 4a/4b, coarse hair. And it WORKS well on my hair. When it was natural it loved it, and now when I am relaxed, it STILL craves it. Maybe that can work for you???? HTH!

Ok KrystalClear,
I will try this when I get home. I'm 10 month into my transition so I have a mix of relaxed ends and natural ng.

I don't have castor oil but I do have some shea butter oil and some aloe oil. I will soak in curl activator and oil, co wash then dry. The more curl moisturizer and oil.

I just don't want to loose anymore hair. I could just cry right now.

Air drying does my hair like this. I now use my hand held dryer on cool. No matter how much condish I use I can not air dry!:nono:

Since you are battling the two textures like my daughter's hair is doing right now, I would do a protein treatment. That stopped her breakage dead in its tracks.

:bighug: Don't cry! I know it's really hard when your hard work is just breaking off :cry3: I have been there, believe me. So you are protein sensitive, is that it? I know my hair breaks off due to lack of moisture as well.

But the part that jumps out at me is that it broke off when you ran your hand through the shrunk up unstretched hair. That might be the biggest problem right there. Next time you'll avoid that and hopefully get a better result.

After I shampoo and DC I add ORS Olive Oil hair lotion and follow with a bit of coconut oil on my ends then always air dry and never had any issues with the air drying. I've noticed my hair gets a little dry sometimes but I just add more hair lotion. If you think moisture is the issue a glycerin based moisturizer like a curl activator spray while your hair is still damp would be a good idea. Coconut oil doesn't have any protein in it so I would seal with the oil after moisturizing with SCurl or some other spray.

I didn't think I was protein sensitive until now, but since evco is not a protein, I guess I just had splotchy dryness.
Last night I rewashed and blow dried. It went a lot smoother. I gonna up my moisture game and maybe even use the expensive Mizani Overnight breakage stuff that I bought months ago but didn't use cause I didn't like the consistency or smell.

Some people cannot air dry. It causes huge breakage for them. So I would do a DC and add a little oil to it.

I really think I am one of them. I noticed last night when I cowashed, there's a section in the back of my head that has severe breakage...Its maybe an inch and half shorter than the rest. :nono: Today is my birthday and I wanted to have cute hair, but now i feel like giving up. Somedays...my hair hates me!

EVCO isn't a protein but one of its properties is that it helps prevent protein loss. There is a thread on it.

ETA: My hair loves air drying. Its soooo soft afterward. But I am relaxed and don't have detangling issues.

Sometimes I leave a little conditioner in my hair and it makes my hair hard (which is to be expected) but I know to keep my hands away from my hair or it will snap if I do not follow up with a moisturize that does not contain a protein. Just makes my hair extra hard. I will use the carefree curl activator on top of the conditioner and that helps alot.

Seems like moisture might be the issue, you can try deep conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner and then drying a different way. Oils never help me when I'm having moisture issues. Coconut oil especially, dries my hair and makes my scalp itch.

If you think protein is the issue then I recommend redken deep fuel. I used this the other day and my hair is so much stronger right now. It's thicker and have elasticity which before it would just snap off. But after this treatment you will need to deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner for sure. My hair was not dry afterward though.

I've tried aphogee too and haven't seen any effects. The Deep Feul is 10x better IMO.

Good luck.

I think you should do a dry DC when you get home, leave it in for a few hours (maybe even over night) then rinse it out, put some leave in and dry your hair the way you know works best for you. For me, a nice long DC does the trick every time!

I don't see how air drying could make your hair break, frizz up maybe but breakage....doesn't sound right. It sounds like you are not sealing your cuticle thus resulting in breakage (raised cuticles snag on each other and break). The cheap and super effective way to close your cuticle is to do a final rinse with a solution of 2 tablespoons of ACV and cold water (about two cups). Bend over in the shower and pour it over your head. I know it sounds harsh (and very cold) but it's worth it.

Haven't read through the whole post but I seriously recommend you read through Supergirl's "sticky" on hair breakage.
