Help...I Am Considering Getting Tree Braids

I would like to try this out while I am stretching my relaxer. I don't want them very long, I really want them done in a cute style. There's a few women at my church who get tree braids on a regular basis done by a lady here in Atlanta named Karen.

For those of you who have had tree braids, were you able to wash them on a regular basis? If so, how is this possible with synthetic hair? I've thought about getting them done with human hair so that I can wash my hair on a weekly basis.
