Hi everyone, I'm new to this board, but I've been visiting for a few months. I've been transitioning for a year and a half. Today I flat-ironed my hair, and I was just sick looking at all of my hair breaking off into my hands, and falling onto the floor. I've said this before, but this time I mean it: NO MORE PRESSING!!! But I don't know what to do with my hair. Anyone transitioning out there, please give me a shout out, I'm going crazy here! About half of my hair is natural, and the other half is relaxed. Besides braids, which I wear occasionally, what can I do with my hair!?!?

are u using a good protectant on your hair? it might not be the pressing alone causing your hair to fall out. u should look at your regime and see if there are any flaws.it also might be cause b/c of the two different textures breaking were they meet. there are also a lot of naturals and transitioners on this bored if u discover/ decide that pressing isnt the way to go anymore. im transitioning and pressing and i use ultrasheen sating creme press. it has some icky ingrediants but it works for me.

What's your goal? Do you need a few more inches before you will have the lenght you desire?

If you are close and the breakage is causing your hair to look bad...then you might want to consider going ahead and cutting the permed ends.

Highly textured hair really can be injured by heat. If the appliance is too hot...the heat can "boil" any moisture inside the cortex of the hair. Once that moisture is gone...the hair becomes brittle and shatters. No amount of conditioning can repair that unfortunately. It is scortched or burnt and burned hair cannot be unburned.

I defintely agree with your decision to leave the heat alone.

Some have mastered the technique and dont see any damage in using heat...but really it is like playing Russian Roullette with your hair when you use heat. You never know if the temp in the air, the temp on the iron, the humidity, the amount of moisture in your hair could be just right...for a burn. It's best to treat your hair with kid gloves from here on out.

If cutting the permed ends is an option...do that. Treat your natrual hair to weekly deep conditioning treatments of HONEY and OLIVE OIL. Honey will actually draw moisture into the hair and the oilive oil will return softness and flexibility to it.

Best wishes on the future results. Hope things work out well.

Do a search on braidouts and transitioning. There is a lot of good information.

What have you been doing during the year and a half that you've been transitioning?

I have read on other sites that twist outs and braid outs are good for blending the two textures.

This is a good idea and roller sets can be done and hair accessories like scarves can be used in addition to cover the new growth and to make it blend better. Also, if you are ready you may consider doing the big chop if you are fed up with transitioning. What else are you doing with your hair now besides pressing? Whatever you decide good luck!
