Okay, I just took out my sewn-in weave tonight after having it in for 2 months. I washed it 3 x and then sat for 30 mins with Affirm 5 in 1 Reconstructor. After rinsing that out I started applying DEEP protein conditioner to leave in overnight and I noticed my hair was matting up. After rinsing it out I find I have this huge clump of tangled hair in the back. It wasn't there before or I would have noticed when shampooing. I applied Humecto conditioner but it is not helping and I am trying to avoid combing all my hair out.

So what big rule did I break which is resulted in this? More importantly is there any way to detangle this without having to cut off hair I just spent 2 mos trying to grow out?? Please Help.

Sorry this happened to you. I would use a ton of cheapy conditioner, a wide tooth comb, and take my time....even if it took me all night. I might also do it in the shower if it felt like the wter pressure would help loosen up the matted parts.

Good luck to you.

Thanks, sounds like that will be my best option if no one knows of any 'magic detagling potion'. Maybe the shower pressure will help.

get some slip first...ORS repl pak, silicon mix, keracare humecto, curl gold curl moisterizer or even creme of nature shampoo...add oil and get under running water and start AT - THE - BOTTOM , work your way up, have some of those products in the shower with you when u need more and have patience, work it TINY BIT BY TINY BIT...blessings to you ! I soooo hope it works out for ya girl !!! ...try this first, put a TON of the curl gold curl moisterizer in your hair , sit under the dryer for 30 mins, then SLEEP IN IT , it will SOFTEN your hair so it will slip easy...THEN add oil and do the under running water thing

This happened to me twice. I learned the hard way that my hair does not like airdrying after about the 6th week. I also learned to handle my new growth with much more sensivity. In my case, I realized that I had sections in my hair that was underprocessed and susceptible to tangling.

In your case it could be the length of time in which you had the weave sewn in.

If you are a relaxed person, this may be a result of demarcation issues: your new growth and relaxed hair are not getting along. Also, washing your hair 3x with shampoo may have contributed further to the tangling, especially if you used a shampoo with harsh detergents. Did you wash your hair in sections (Crown and Glory Method) or did you wash all of it together? If all together, after being hidden for two months, then that may be the biggest culprit.

Section hair into small parts, start from ends to root, take your time, try not to tug (even though that may be hard not to do). Good luck.

Okay, I just added a pak and oil. Maybe I will let it work overnight cause I need a break now. I'm going slow, if I can just comb out this remaining "dread"...

I did wash it all together. And, I just realized that was the first time I just washed after removing braids/weave. I usually am getting a relaxer right away so I guess all that new growth is what did it. I'm a little scared to get the weave agaom tomorrow though:perplexed

So what is the Crown and Glory method? I'm going to need to wash it again in the morning .

always ensure, after removing braids or weaves to properly detangle and remove all shedding hair before shampoo/conditioning hair.

Check www.growafrohairlong.com it's a regimen where you grow out your hair using braids (or in your case weaves) I would also check Rabia Elaine's fotki she grows her out successfully in weaves and is quite detailed on her regimen...HTH

PS: I think you od-ed on the protein (Affirm 5 in 1 + a deep protein treatment) try as some of the ladies suggested a moisturising conditioner, I use Nexxus humectress/ Keracare humecto

The Crown and Glory Method can be found on growafrolonghair.com.
Robin, who has beautiful hair, created a system in which you part your hair in a few sections, braid each, and shampoo each one seperately. This prevents matting.

I am almost certain shampooing your hair not once but 3x, all together, with all of that new growth (2 months worth) caused most of your tangling. You need a conditioner with a lot of slip to get you thru all of this matting.

Visit the site, and good luck.

This may be at the heart of your problem: lack of thorough detangling in addition to lathering up 3 times which was probably overkill. 5-n-1 is not a super strong protein, and it can give slip, so I don't think it was the culprit. I would suggest if you have some of that detangling spray for removing braids that you put that in your hair and gently detangle, or lots of conditioner as someone else suggested. I may be a little late on this post, so I hope that you have resolved the problem without much hair loss. Tangles can be a bear, but if you slowly and carefully work through them, you can save most of your hair. Good luck. Let us know what happened.

I find that's it generally not a good idea to use a protein when you have a lot of newgrowth and/or especially if you've just removed braids or a sew-in weave. I learned that the hard way once a long time ago. I only do protein treatments either on relaxer days or about a week after I've applied my relaxer. Also, washing the hair at least once a week if not every 2 weeks while the hair is in braids or a weave reduces the amount of tangling and matting you'll have when you get ready to take them out.

I just went through the same experience...yesterday! Fortunately, my girlfriend helped me detangle and get out the remaining shedded hairs. We just used the tail end of a rattail comb and slowly loosened the knots and worked our way through. The fact that I'm post partum added to the mess, but we managed to get it all untangled after about 5 hours!

Good luck!
