Good morning, ladies! I have a dilemma--a serious one that is causing me sleepless nights and tears. My oldest daughter's (age 15), hair has not been right for years. I PCJ'd her hair at age 6 because she could not take me combing her hair (If only I knew then what I know now). Now she has see-through hair that I keep conditioned and don't use heat on.

Every "stylist" I take her to always says, "She needs a perm," which to me is the problem. We tried transitioning but since she is in high school, she was self-conscious about the whole process.

What can I do? I have tried everything! Her hair won't grow!

Do any of you ladies know a "Hair Care Specialist" in the St. Louis/E. St. Louis? Or, do you have any suggestions on how I can nurse her hair back to health?

I was thinking of Aphogee treatments every four weeks, w/ moisturizing treatments in between. I also have styling issues w/ her hair in that, she has very thin--bald temples, and she refuses to "baggie" in order to gain length.

HELP ME, PLEASE?! I don't know what else to do.

I am sorry that you and your daughter are going through this. I think you should take her to see a dermatologist to make sure there is nothing wrong with her scalp that needs to be treated medically.

Is her hair still relaxed? If so, I too would recommend holding off on these until you find out if this is the reason her hair is thin.

Is her hair very fragile? If not, maybe she can try braids to grow out her relaxer.

I know that some ladies have said that the Vitatress Biotin Creme (by Nexxus I believe) is good for thinning edges and hair. Some have also said the Dr. Miracle Temple and Nape balm are good.

How is her diet? Does she eat healthy? What about vitamins? I know vitamins have definitely helped me in that I know I don't eat as healthy as I should and although they don't replace my eating healthy, they have helped. I take a regular multi-vitamin that has iron and zinc in it as well as taking biotin. I know that it has helped in that I never had bottom eyelashes until I started taking my vitamins regularly; meaning I was indeed deficient.

I am sure other ladies will chime in and I will pray for you both.

Thanks, ladies, for responding so quickly. My daughter is relaxed now and I have taken her to a dermatologist who said that nothing is wrong w/ her scalp. I just read the thread on daily conditioner washes and thought that might be a start but again I worry about how to style her hair. Currently, her is at about the nape of her neck in the back and to her chin, in the front. It has been that length for almost three years!

We just took braids down and I did not like the results and she doesn't need anymore tension in her weak areas.

So, along w/ your advice on how to nurse her hair, I need styling options as well as product recs for daily CWs.

BTW, she wears her hair in a ponytail but I can't convince her of the benefits of tucking those ends--she is a teenager and thinks she knows EVERYTHING!

Well I know that a lot of the teen girls like to wear their hair out, but I have seen a bun craze in this area. Maybe you can persuade her to do a cutesy bun or something. OR, one thing is to get her to put some type of protectant on her ends. I don't wear my hair in protective styles, but I do put castor oil on the length of my hair, especially the ends. Some ladies use Profective Healthy Ends and they say it is great. Maybe get one of those for her to help protect her ends.

I am not one who does the conditioner wash thing, so I am not sure about products, but if you do a search on "conditioner wash" I am sure you will come up with some great stuff. I know a lot of ladies mentioned using V05 conditioners though.

Also, how frequent are you relaxing her hair? This could be the main issue. The relaxers are too close together, which is causing overlap on previously relaxed hair. Leading to thin, fragile hair.

For those thinning edges, you could research using essential oil mixes on them. Make sure you do your research though.

You might also try using wild growth oil or surge.

For thinning edges I personally recommend the Nioxin product line. It is a bit pricey but worth it, IMO. The Nioxin products have an ingredient in it that removes DHT(I think thats the name) which is a chemical produced agent, if I'm not mistaken, responsible for pre-mature hair thinning.

A few monthes back I suddenly had a problem with thinning around my hairline. I assumed it was from the relaxers so first thing I did was avoid relaxing those areas when I did my re-touch. I will continue to do that until my hairline is lush and full again no matter how retarded the new growth starts to look, lol! Second thing I did was go out and buy the Nioxin shampoo, scalp therapy conditioner, and follicle booster. The follicle booster comes in a small amount so you may go through it quickly but by the time I was on my second bottle I could see healthy new growth(tiny little corkscrew curls) sprouting up around my edges! I was very pleased!
Now I am diligently taking all my vitamins and taking care of my scalp. I hope by spring to have my hair completely back to its full and completely thick state again!

In addition to supplements if you want to try herbs, the following are excellent for strong healthy hair growth; horsetail, lemongrass, and red raspberry. I buy the horsetail in liquid form and the red raspberry in capsule form from the Vitamin Shoppe. The lemongrass I grow in our little flower garden and use the leaves to make fresh tea! :D

Hope some of this helps! I'm sure the ladies will give you a wealth of information!

I'm on this and I appreciate your responses. I have learned as an LHCF member, about stretching relaxers--I'm in my fourth month of stretching and she is too.

The Nioxin sounds pretty promising and I will purchase that today--thanks, dtachi.

@Kaddy, can you show me some pictures of cute buns so I can show this hard-headed girl?
@delightfulflame, I tried essential oils before but ordering them was a strain so I stopped using them.
