Help!! Does Hard Water Mess with product performance???!!!

I just moved to a new area and I've been having problems with hard water! I've been following my normal routine of washing my hair two times a week and my hair is just not the same. My shampoos have all made my hair hard, tangle knotty mess! At first I taught that it was the products that I was using, I started using some new shampoos and I figured they sucked. Last night I washed with a clarifying shampoo figuring out I had heavy duty build up, it went ok. Afterwards I followed up with a moisturizing shampoo, an old standby that always corrects any problems. Guess what? My hair was so hard and tangled up I could barely get my wide tooth comb through my hair! On a strange note my conditioners have been performing lovely! Even the crappy ones! What's going on here? I NEED HELP PLEASE!!! TIA

Maybe a water filter might help. I have a shower filter (to help control eczema)--it removes chlorine and other contaminants that can damage your skin. I use the Aquansa brand (you have to purchase online), but there are others you can get a Lowes etc.

I have a shower head that I can detach ....can be used to do your hair depending on the spot you choose to wash your hair.

I hope you find a solution.

Oh absolutely yes!!! Hard water can mess with your hair's health, your skin, everything I think. I had to get a water filter to get better results from my hair products. I've had amazing results since using it.

Yeah I taught I was going crazy but when my old standbys (keracare & DHD) didn't perform like they usually do I knew something was up. I'm not even interested in washing my hair anymore because of this. I have to force myself to wash and that's not normal for me. My ezcema's been acting up again too. I will invest in a good hard water filter asap! Any suggestions?

There's another brand that you can buy locally and I think it's called the Sprite Filter--Lowes or Home Depot carries them.

I seldom wash my hair in the shower, maybe 1 or 2 times a year. 99% of the time I wash it in my kitchen sink.

Does anyone know of any good filter systems that are mainly for the sink?

Hi HealthB4Length.... Just be aware that filters only remove chlorine they do not remove minerals from the water. You most probably will notice a positive difference from the filter because the chlorine has been removed but your water will still be hard. You will need a water softener if you want to treat the hard water.

I have hard water. I use both a whole house water softener system and a shower filter. Although I had a water softener (installed when home was built), I noticed a considerable difference to my hair when I added the shower filter. I, too, have the Sprite filter. I purchased it at Home Depot.

If your apartment has a standard shower head like 99% of homes do, then a shower filter should work. They're actually quite easy to self-install too.

As far as chelating - if you are chelating, then I assume you have product build-up in your hair and if you do chelate and there is not a difference in your hair then either you didn't need to chelate or on the other side of the spectrum, you really do need a shower filter or water softner. So I guess you can chelate first and if your hair still feels rough or unresponsive to great products then install the shower filter.

I haven't had the chance to install my filter yet because I've been so sick. I just washed my hair this morning and it went ok. I was aprehensive to do so because my last shampoo was horrible ( conditioning session was great). Well this time around I used some of my ABBA Moisture shampoo and I am so happy! The shampoo made my hair soft, detangled and moisturized. So I think I just stumbled on to something; Sulfite/fide free shampoos are OK to use when you have hard water. In fact in my case that may be the best thing to do. Stick with the sulfate free shampoos when you are in a area that has very hard water.

Just a small update: I installed the shower filter recently and I've noticed such a positive improvement in the way my hair and skin feels! I want to thank you all for your suggestions. I didn't get a chance to get the Sprite brand but I got a $20 GE filter. It was easy to install too! When I get a chance I'll get one of the higher end filters but for now this is working great!
