I blew out my hair to get it braided and the sides are 9 inches long and the middle where men go bald in the back is 3 inches long ..do you think this is breakage or is my hair not growing in this area ?I do not have a lot of hair in my comb except the one time I used the PAul Mitchell strong shampoo which made my hair really knotty and during the detangling process I had a huge ball of hair.. could it all have been from this area? is it because I sleep on my back, my sleep pattern ?...HELP

my hair is like this also...... it is verrrry fragile in that area so I make sure no pulling, extra moisture, and I sperate that section before styling to give it "special attention"

I have three different textures. My crown is a 4a, my nape is a finer textured 3c and the rest a med/coarse textured 3c. The crown I have to be careful with because it is drier and more fragile, the back because the strands are finer and break more easily. I dont know if any of them grow faster or slower, the nape looks longer faster because I have less curl there and the crown looks shorter (and it is shorter in actual length) because the curl is tighter. I would just give the area you are having problems with a lil extra TLC and see if it maintains its length.

i have the same problem my crown i think it is going bald my mother and aunt have the same problem so that is why i am on this board every day willing to try anything i don't want to be bald but i am braiding it wearing a wig and then braid out i think i am putting the heat, weaves, micros on the back burner untill my spot fills in also i am going to send that web site some hair to analyze but that won't be untill after christmas

I have the same problem - my sides are a good few inches longer than the middle / back. For me it is because I used to wrap my hair too tightly (or use not enough rollers at the back) at night & therefore put too much strain on that area. The back is still trying to catch up. Also I tend to pay more attention to the parts of my hair that I can actually see when it comes to moisturising - it's alot harder for me to reach the back. So I'm now trying to concentrate on keeping the back extra moisturised.

that happened to me once. Back in 1995.
I was putting in my own relaxers then.
One day I looked and my hair was shoulderlength and my crown was like 3-4 inches. Don't know how that happened and never saw the breakage.
I cut it all off and started over growing hair out not using braids or anything that could cause stress to my hair.
Thank goodness haven't had that happened since.

thanks ladies for the advise I got it braided today I hope that they did not do it too tight .my head does not hurt..
I'll be wearing them for the entire winter.I have had food luck with box braids before , bad with micros so .we will see in a couple of months if i need to do anothe big chop :( .
Once again thanks.

hi there,

it's probably a combo of all the stuff you mentioned. the area you're talking about is where my hair was the most prone to breakage when i was relaxed years ago. even though i've been natural for years, i still find that area to be in need of more tlc. it's a high traffic area (sleeping, rubbing against the headrest in the car, etc.)

make sure you moisturize your hair on the daily while you're in braids. i'd oil that area with a fine point tip every few days with a high quality product. i'm sure there are quite a few. when you get your braids touched up, i'd take that area loose, clip the ends, deep con, and then put them back into the braids. be extra careful with that area when/if you pull your braids into ponytails, etc.

take care,
P1
