Most of the protein will be in conditioners, however there are a few shampoos with protein in them. I'm not sure why a person would want protein in their shampoo though. Most brands have a conditioner with protein in them, so if you have a favorite shampoo or brand you like to use then you might want to start there. There are soooooooo many, I personally use Matrix protopak 5+, Mizani Kerafuse and Redken CAT.

The protein in styling gels is one of the reasons it is drying and breaks the hair.
You must have a good balance of moisture and protein. If you hair is in good condition, you probably only need a heavy protein once a month. Protein makes the hair strong, which can make it brittle if you over do it, hence protein being bad for your hair. After a protein treatment follow through with some serious moisture, to soften and replenish the hair. If you can find a conditioner with hydrolized human hair keratin protein in it because it contains all 19 aminos you'll be doing good. It also has been broken down (hydrolized) into the right molecular weight and size so it can penetrate the hair shaft properly...hair is made of mostly keratin protein.
