Okay, here's the deal. I love to wear my hair down & out. Will daily flat ironing without a heat protectant really mess up my ends? I bought Mizani thermal protectant, but it makes my hair feel weird & hard. Can anyone suggest a good one? I don't like to wrap my hair, because I'm afraid of thinning edges. I need something, a routine that will work out for me, some kind of way I can have the flat hair with bumped ends daily, just shake it out/comb it and go in the morning. I haven't had a touch up in over 2 months and my hair is in good shape otherwise. I just need a little help with this. TIA

Ummm, you won't gain any length if you continue to flat iron everyday. Well, if you do, the progress will be extremely slow.

Try flatironing only after your wash and bump the ends. Nightly before you go to bed roll your hair mohawk style with a few large rollers. In the morn you take out the rollers comb and go. I love the way my hair turns out when I use this method. Looks great and leaves my hair full of body!

Absolute wishful thinking on my part. I was thinking too if I washed daily and flat ironed daily I would be safe because of the moisture. The Mohawk rolling sounds good, are they big rollers? and what kind? Also how do you do the rolling? I appreciate the help. Also, if I wash my hair daily, let it air dry, how will I get it straight other than the flatiron or pressing comb heat? I want length with fresh smelling hair daily at the same time.

Daily heat is too much even if you wash daily! That's a nono :nono:

I use either the red rollers or the grey plastic rollers. You know the one's when you get your hair set at the stylist. I part my hair in 3-4 section. Nape, ear to ear, ear to ear again and front. Kind of like this (((( I gather the hair on the top of my head and roll each section and secure with a clip. I put on the scarf and in the morning. I have body and bounce.

Hmmm, let me see if I can find some pics or a thread describing the mohawk.

I agree with DSD, the daily heat would just be too much, I can't see it being worth it. It seems like it would be much, much more damaging than possible thinning ends from wrapping. Also with wrapping, you can alternate which way you wrap it.

The Mohawk technique sounds really promising though, I will try that tonight myself.

California, check out DatJersyDyme's album. She has pics of the mohawk their. Here is the link:

Thanks for the link. I will definitely check it out to learn how to do it. How do I clip in the rollers though? I mean I don't know which clips to use, is it the long silver ones? I know what yall mean on the heat thing, but I just like the way my hair looks after the flatiron is applied after a fresh wash. See, I want to wash my hair daily, I put another thread about that daily washing thing. Girl, that's why I permed my hair, to have silky as possible results when its worn down. What ya think?

You are welcome! I use the long silver clips. I don't think washing the hair daily is necessary. It's just preference. I was a daily washer for a long time but I wore my hair in airdryed styles. If you must have silky great smelling hair. Try doing it only once or twice a week you can use hair fresheners to keep the hair smelling good.

I wear my hair down and straight most of the time, and I don't use any heat. All I do is wash my hair and let it air dry hanging down loose. I usually oil my scalp and hair, and wrap it once the hair is dry. I wrap my hair without clips or pins, and I tie it with a satin scarf. No heat required. I have been doing this for over a year, and I see absolutely no need for a blow dryer or flat iron ever again.

California, you may also want to try sylver2's scarf method. She wears her hair out and doesn't do protective styles. She has a fotki album showing her method. Just find sylver2 in the members list and look for the link in her sig.

Girl, now see you're blessed. Because my hair is so thick and full, it won't act right if I did that. My hair is bushy without a flatiron. Now, see thinner/fine hair has its benefits absolutely! My stuff is like Samoan hair.

I wear my air-dried hair straight most of the time, sometimes with curled ends, sometimes not. When I want curled/bumped ends, I use my Caruso curlers, which only take seconds to heat up and about ten minutes to set. The curls will last for two days or more, depending on how much wind I encounter each day. You just have to pin the hair up lightly and wrap with a silk or satin scarf at night. Then you can let your hair down in the morning and shake or finger comb and go. Or, you can use a comb/brush but just stop short of combing/brushing the ends of your hair.

If I am not concerned with having bumped ends, when I get ready for bed at night, I hold my hair at the base of my neck as if I am going to make a low ponytail. Then I twist it around upward and pin it straight up the center of my head with a couple of gentle, plastic duckbill clips. The end of the twist drapes over my forehead a bit, so I bend that part backward onto my head and pin it. When I take it down it the morning and comb/brush it, it is straight. Or, I can leave it with the nice wave it develops from being pinned up overnight.

I hope this helps some. This what I have always done to maintain a straight style. :yep:

LOL. I wouldn't mind bushier/thicker hair. I just wanna still be able to wear my wrap. Its so easy and low maintenance.

I feel you. I like to wear my hair out every single day also. I am not into protective styles at all. I get depressed when my hair is all pinned up. :look:
I used to flat-iron everyday when i didn't know any better. And it will damage your hair and you will not be able to retain any length. What i do now is I wash about every 5 days, and either I'll airdry and straighten with a flat-iron OR I'll blowdry (on low) and straighten using a roundbrush. (If i have alot of roots, then i'll definitely blowdry.) During the drying process...I use WGHO on my roots, elastica QP mangobutter which is a moisturizer/thermal protectant and also use NTM serum which leaves my hair extra silky. Then for the next 5 days, I'll simply use my steamrollers every morning. And apply a light dab of UBH moisturizer daily. This has worked well for me. So i guess this is a solution to those who want to wear their hair 'out', but not necessarily bone-straight.

oh and I might add that my hair is 4z and is very thick and unruly... (but when i tame it, the fullness/fluffiness is the bomb!)

My hair is very thick/full too, with lots of body, so the method I posted above may work very well for you. However, you might not achieve a "thin" look to your hair. I think a lot of full-haired ladies have a goal of getting their hair to look "thin" because they think "thin" goes hand-in-hand with "straight." There was a time when I was a teen that I tried to achieve that look. I would wonder why my hair never looked "thin" like many other (black) girls I knew. But, my hair was actually as straight as theirs was, there were just a lot more hairs on my head, and each individual hair was thicker, too.

Many girls had hair that looked like it had the thickness of a few sheets of notebook paper put together -- like if you lifted up that one thin layer, there was nothing underneath it. For a while, I wanted and tried to get my hair to look like that, too. But, my hair always looked as if you had made a wig of their hair, then put five or more of those wigs one on top of the other on my head. If you pick up a thin layer of my hair, there is more hair underneath it, and more hair underneath that layer, and so on. (I hope that made sense, visually)

I had a couple of (black) friends who had hair that was just as thick (and as long, too) as mine was, though, so I was not alone. The thinner-haired girls' hair was usually neck-length or shorter. I don't know if there is a connection there and never thought about or realized that until writing this post -- I'm seeing faces and heads of hair from HS in my mind now.

You can have hair that is thick/full and straight at the same time. You'll just always look like you have more hair than a thin-haired person, that's all. You can flat iron it often to make it look thin and, over time, it may actually become thinner due to breakage/heat damage. However, that is not good for your hair, of course.

Oh, wet-setting and drying under a dryer can also give a thinner look to your hair, in a healthier way than falt-ironing. :yep:

Girl yes, depressed ain't the word. I can't handle hiding my hair no more. I mean its growing back and so pretty, I want to show it.

Thanks for those products/information, I'm definitely getting that stuff. I gotta invest in some steamrollers too.

 You a mess girl, your hair 4z.

Right on for the advice! But yeah wet-setting is cool, but now I can't stand sitting under the dryer like that on a regular basis to achieve that look, maybe once in a while. But, now I don't want thin hair, oh honey I know we are truly Blessed with this thick stuff, I just admire how thinner hair just lay flat/easier to tame.

I know what you mean. I don't know if I will ever have the patience to sit under a hot dryer with a wet-set like I used to. It used to take two hours or more to dry and I just can't imagine going through that again.

Fortunately, now that I've been using Organic Root Stimulator's Nature's Shine Spray when my hair is almost dry, my air-dried hair looks like it's been flat ironed. And, the Caruso curlers make it look like a wet set. :yep:

I hope you find a great technique that gives you the result you want without any damage! :)

I do this also. I use this technique more when I have thick roots, because the wrap becomes impossible. It does work.

Hi, My hair is extremely thick and bushy as well.
I usually wear mine in the doobie wrap. . A lot of people have reservations about wrapping but I been doing this for 16 years comes out straight everyday, no breakage or thinning ever.
when I'm couple months post relaxer I wear it straight down,Tie satin sacrf tight over it, hair hangs out back, I cover that part up with a satin bonnet. Wake up next day hair is straight, sleek and new growth is flat.
I never have to flat iron. Perfect if u want the flat hair. I love flat hair, which is hard when its so thick..lol

Thanks for the advice. Your hair is so beautiful, and your scarf method is something I'm considering (I just hate sitting under the dryer). Do you Co-Wash? How often do you wash? Do you flatiron? Do you switch up the direction of your doobie wrap?
TIA
