Hello, ladies! I just wanted to know if it was possible for anyone to pernanently color their hair and not have it completely break off. I have colored my hair in the past with little to no damage, and I have also colored my hair in the past WITH a good deal of damage. I wanted to know if you guys think it's possible for a relaxed head to color their hair without losing it all! I really want a change and I am thinking about coloring my own hair with one of those box kits from Sally. I would assume that I would have to DC my hair regularly and maybe up my cowashes. I'm not quite sure if I want to do it yet, because I don't want to sacrifice my progress. Any advice?

Hey! I color my hair on a regular and experience little to no breakage. You are absolutely right about the DC and cowashes. I use this stuff called Hair Mayonaise by Africa's Best. It is sum good stuff!!! The key is to always keep the hair moisturized. I always let my hair airdry unless I go to get it permed or go to the Dominican Salon. Also try the liquid version of the Africa's Best Mayo.

Henna (body art quality) is permanent, natural and very safe to use for coloring relaxed or natural hair. Some of the ladies here use it often, not for more color but it also strengthens the hair. Henna can also be combined with the indigo plant and/or amla to get browns and black colors. :)

I colour my hair with loreal casting, clairol's textures and tones and dark and lovely colour with no obvious damage! I usually do a hard aphogee every 8 weeks, I incorporate more protein in my regimen I use Aveda DR intesive once a week, co-wash with shea butter cholesterol twice a week and moisturise with Giovanni direct daily sealed with olive and or castor oil, my hair's thicker than its ever been and has no rough or split ends. Once in a while I DC with Humectress when I think my hair's getting too dry. I treat my ends every 6 or so weeks using Robin's (growafrohairlong.com) method with cold water/ oil and a flat iron. I'm happy with my progress just patiently(or not) waiting for the length:yep:

BTW: My hair is mildly texlaxed about 20%

It is possible but you hair going into the process needs to be as healthy as possible and you are going to have to be just as consistent, even moreso with conditioning once you are colored.

Yes, I have permanent colored hair. My hair has been colored for the past 10 years now with no problem. I use Ms. Clairol Lumizer (clear) - it lightens your hair to its highest potential. It's not as severe and harsh as other permanent colors and dyes. The key as someone else mentioned is keeping your hair moisturized. Over the years, I was never one for doing a deep DC on my hair - not until recently. But even then, my hair thrived and maintained. Now, of course, since I've learned so much about my hair I DC every weekend under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes. I've also incorporated the Aphgoee hard core protein treatment in my routine every 6-8 weeks.
