It occurred to me that I finally feel totally comfortable with my hair. I can keep it healthy and nicely styled in any of it's many forms: curled, stretched, big, or frizzy.

It's taken me 10 years and any number of bad hair days to get to this place. I was wondering if this is the usual time it takes to learn the hair or am I just a slow learner?:drunk:

How long did it take you to become "master" of your hair?:whipgirl:

Well, I'm in my 6th year, and I think I'm finally getting it. This natural hair care thing is unbelievable--- how its evolved.

I think I have a handle on things but I would never admit that I've mastered it. Shhhh! I want no trouble. :look: Let's just say we have an understanding. :yep:

After about 10yrs of trial & error I now know what wrks & what doesn't.

Yes its sad to say tht it took 10yrs & 10 setbacks to realize my hair has a low tolerance to bleach & certain relaxers & certain protein treatments to finally get it right.

I hve a 15 yr old daughter w/her 1st sew in & hopefully everything I've learned won't be in vain & it won't take her as long as its taken me to get it right

Oh, no. I'm almost in my second year of transitioning; however, I do know what my hair likes and doesn't care for. I'm loving the whole process of learning about my natural hair.

It's been 5 years since my last relaxer, and I've learned a lot. I don't feel I've mastered my hair, but I am so much more comfortable with maintenance and styling.

I feel like my hair doesn't want to be mastered. Especially the ends. Every time I think I have it, they say "um no" and split.

I've not mastered my hair but I'm getting better at listening and adjusting accordingly. Case in point, our extreme heat is starting to pick up so I know it's time to break out the castor oil for sealing and up the co-washes and deep conditioning.

Sigh...my hair can be wishy washy...some days it lets me be in control and other days....not so much.

No mastery here but I am making progress. I am in year 3 and I have finally found a regimen and understand the ingredients my hair likes. I am still working on moisture, retention and loving my ends. I haven't even begun working with styling or wearing my hair straight. :nono: I really don't branch out much into dyes, sew-ins, etc because I remember the trouble I had with them. I don't need any addition complexity right now.

I am just hoping that because I am caring for my hair better this year than last that I will see at least the retention results I saw last year.

I haven't mastered my hair as far as styling but moisture/protein... I think I'm doing pretty well, as well as retaining length. When I can flat iron with no breakage and figure out how to really rollerset...thats when I have mastered my hair.

I would say that I am starting to master my hair. It seems like the twistout is the most agreeable style for me in all aspects. Just this year, I realized that my hair does not like cones. Since I have stopped using cones, my hair has been softer, shinier/blacker, and more moisturized.

I think that I've mastered my hair. I guess this would be year 4 of my HHJ. So far, keeping my hair moisturized and protective is working. However, just when I think I've found a routine that works, I find something better. For instance, I've had to play around with different protective styles to see which one suits me best and I've had to learn what conditioners to use, how often, etc. A lot of trial and error has gone into this process.

'Mastered'??? ehhh :nono: NO. LOL I will say that we have a better 'liking' for one another tho. when she clearly says she doesn't like something.. I don't try to force it on her.. I listen and KIM. I'd rather listen now (as I haven't been natural all that long) than later.

Ditto, but only beacuse im keeping mine covered i dont know what i will do when i start styling it and wearing it out:perplexed

Master :ha: I have been natural for over 10 years. I spent most of it finding my way. Once I get one issue handled, something new pops up. Here is what I can say with confidence

I know what products my hair likes
Getting an understanding of my scalp
I know how to grow hair
Learning retention
Mastered trims
Pretty good at hair cuts
Now I am delving into styling, heat styling and the occasional bandwagon.

It took about 3 months to learn the ins and outs. I used to spend about 4-5 hours/day on the forum when I began transitioning, back in '09. I've pretty much been on cruise control since then.

I learned an awful lot from my hair idols - Irresistible, Chicoro, PinkSkates, FlowerHair, BlackBarbie, CelinaStarr, etc. LHCF is truly a gift from God! :yep:

I feel like the day I master my hair is the day it rains gold. My hair basically does whatever it wants. And as long as it's not falling out of my head, I'll let it do whatever it wants

I know what to do in theory, but I usually slack up and my hair ends to telling me to go to hayle

It's taken me seven years, and I just mastered it five months ago. My hair has finally started thriving and this is the first time my hair has ever been this thick and close to BSL.
