I'm tired of paying money to get my hair done every two weeks.I have yet to find a stylist who cares about the overall health of hair and can make my hair look the way I want it to.I decided that I'm going to start doing my hair myself, I think it will come out a whole lot healthier and longer. My hair is neck length my goal is shoulder length I think I can attain this goal on my own. Does anyone feel me on going to the hairdresser vs doing it yourself. I'm determined to achieve my goal (I'll be posting pics soon). Any good suggestions for a hair care regimen. Please help.

I wanna say "yes, girl you can do it on your own" no one is going to take better care and time with your hair than yourself. There is tons of info on this site that offers the self help guides and of course tons of product reviews. What products do you currently use on your hair? I know you can reach your goal without going to the hair dresser I have been doing my own hair for about 6 months now and it is looking good and I am saving money (j/k I am a PJ so not really saving money) but I save time sitting in the shop all day long. I can normally wash my hair at night do what I have to do let it air dry over night and I am ready in the morning and I do my oils and moisture stuff in the evening tie my hair up and get ready for the next day.

I have currently just started using dominican products in my hair and oil: castor oil( for thickness) tea tree oil (for itches) Wonder 8 Oil (smells good :) MN (for growth) and I also use BT (for growth) I have Shine heat protectant and a mousse that I use and Lacio Lacio leave in Conditioner Kera Care glossifier for the glossy shine that is not weighing my hair down I also use BT hair balm (for growth) and some more stuff but I also take a multi-vitamin

NE way GO Luck looking forward to hearing good hair reports from you!!!!!!

I used to have an aversion to putting chemicals in my own hair. I was affraid I was going to take my hair out. The result is that I was paying someone else $60.00 every six weeks to take my hair out. My cousin talked me into letting her put a PCJ no-lye relaxer in my hair. My hair is just as straight and the chemicals are not as strong so we'll see if this helps. The upside is that this cost me $2.50 as opposed to $60.00 so at least if my hair falls out, it will have cost me $57.50 less to have my hair fall out. I always wash and roller set my own hair. I have been doing that since I was 13 and got my first relaxer because my mom wasn't about to pay someone $35 every week for a wash and set.

Try doing it yourself. Things can't really get much worse. If you don't like it, you can always go back to a salon.

ooh I feel you on this one. And the only thing stopping me from going every couple of weeks is that I think she's a good person and I dont want to insult her. i know that's a bad reason... but you know how people can be. She gets an attitude when I dont come every couple of weeks.

I think you have the right idea!

Getting hair done at salon approximately 60.00 every two weeks $1,500.00

Time at the salon approximately 4 hours every two weeks a year 100 hours

Learning from LHCF how to take care of own hair - PRICELESS

What is the saying feed a man fish every day you make him a slave. Show a man how to fish you make him self sufficient.

Go for it girl, you can do this. Determine what your goals are then start gaining knowledge from all of these experts on this board.

Here you know they truly have your best interest at heart and not trying to receive anything in return.

I have a stylist that I can trust and still have opted for doing my own hair (outside of touch-ups and infrequent trims) since finding LHCF. When I do go to the salon I see it as my once twelve-weekly treat. But when I do my own hair I see it as my semi-weekly or weekly treat.:yep: As previous posters have mentioned, you can set your own time in your own home. You can use as much good conditioner as you wish. You can even have your hair done in your undies!! Nothing like doing it yourself.

I definitely feel your pain, I was in that situation about a year ago when my mother lost all of her hair due to a stylist's HORRIBLE treatment; mind you, my mother had been going to her for a year. She went from having BSL hair to having to now have a natural haircut that its about 1 inch in length. Don't get me wrong, it looks GREAT on her, but if she had to choose between healthy long hair and healthy short, I think the answer is obvious.

I know for that for me, my problem has always been trying to find a stylist that I can trust. Someone who will take care of my hair as well as they would theirs. I find that in the end, the length of time and process it would take for me to do my hair would be arduous, but in the end at least I know I care for my hair and I'm doing the proper regimen that works for ME.

YOU CAN DO IT!!! I have been doing my own hair since August of 2006. My only regret is that I didn't take any before shots. Not that I didn't want to but I was TOTALLY distract about the condition of my hair. When I started, my hair was tapered in the back...supershort and VERY DAMAGED.:wallbash: Now, a little over a year later, I am at shoulder length. I do go to a stylist every 10 weeks for my relaxer and every time I go she tells me how long and healthy it is. I owe my success to the WONDERFUL information that I've received on this forum. It has proven to be invaluable. You will have to experiment to see what works and doesn't work for your hair but NO ONE will take better care of your hair than you! So my advice is peruse threads on this site, take some pics and get started. Your hair will thank you!!!:yep:

I got my hair done every 2 weeks for years. I started doing my own hair earlier this year. I bought a hood dryer, magnetic rollers, shampoo, deep conditoner, and leave-in. For the first time my trips to the store started to include a trip down the shampoo aisle. The first time I washed my own hair it felt strange to get in the shower without a shower cap.

I used to spend almost $1,000 a year getting my hair done. I used to get a relaxer every 6 weeks, and the other times I would just get my hair washed, conditioned, & flatironed.

Now I do everything at home except for relaxer touch-ups, which I do about every 12 weeks. And no more flat ironing - roller sets only.
