Some people used Color Fix minus step 3 (it has peroxide)
Someone posted this on yahoo, but not sure if they are relaxed or not: Like you, I dyed my hair black with Bigen, a Japanese dye that turned it artificial blue / black, and I tried every single color remover there is.
The only one that actually lifted some of the color without trashing my hair is One 'n Only Colorfix. Although it's more expensive than some of the others, there are a good five uses in the three-bottle kit (and with black dye you will almost certainly have to do repeat applications, as I did) You can buy this at Sally's beauty supply for about $13 if you have one in your area and if not you may get it on line -- Follica.com is one site but the price there is $18.95. However, even if you buy it elsewhere, I highly recommend that before using this product you read the 233 user ratings for colorfix there, as a lot of them contain very useful tips.
For instance, just use part 1 (the color reducer) and part 2 (the activator). Part 3 is the part that has the peroxide in it. The only reason to use it is that when you apply this peroxide, your hair may well go back to its darker color again, and this lets you know that you have to keep repeating Steps 1 and 2. However, if you are willing to wait a few days to see what color it turns it will oxidize on its own and you can save your hair the trauma of the peroxide.
Be forewarned -- do not re-dye your hair immediately, because it will take way too much color and likely turn black again. And when you finally do re-color it, choose a color several shades lighter than the color you desire. Really really. And even then, watch what color it's turning on your hair, because five or ten minutes may be more than enough.
Like you, I wasn't able to afford a professional color correction (unemployed at the moment), and unfortunately, after using One n Only, I used additional color removers from other companies which only caused additional damage without giving me anymore lift.
It really is an excellent product that I now keep on hand for just these kinds of color emergencies, as it's far easier to lift color that's too dark without 48 hours of application.
