A broke graduate
There is this little girl name Kierra. The problem is that she has frizzy hair. Now the HD crew comes in to save the day by giving her straight hair. I am looking at this girl's hair and I don't think it is that unmanageable. I feel that they should work with her hair texture and use the right products with it. Why make it straight? I don't see nothing wrong with making hair hair texture more defined. Now making it straight is not a bad thing but it seems like it is the only way that her hair is acceptable to me. Am I being too fanatical about this hair issue?

I agree with u. That little girl has a beautiful head of hair. I think they should deep condition it and do a press & curl for health and style change.

I saw it..and the lady that hosts the show mentioned that little kids don't know anything about exotic hair. I think that's why they straightened it. It must be really hard on the little girl to go to school everyday with frizzy hair. It was frizzy, but I COULD see her with BEAUTIFUL curls. At any rate, I don't think they relaxed her hair. The stylist said the white stuff he put on her hair was conditioner, and then he mentioned some kind of straightening balm or something.

I don't think you're being fanatical at all. I hate that show so I didn't see it , but I see them do this all the time on reality/makeover shows and it irks me to no end. I have seen women with beautiful natural hair who they weave up, cut too much off, or straighten. Even women with nice relaxed hair who they weave up instead of giving them a good trim, cut, or whatever they need. Instead of working with the hair and texture, it seems like they're always working against it. IMHO, the problem is they have already selected a stylist before knowing what the person will need and the people in charge of the show don't know who is the right stylist/style for a person of color.

ETA: I keep meaning to ask you this--who in the heck is Big June  ?

Yeah, I saw it. The momma just needs to slap some ponytails in her head with a good brush, grease and some water. Unfortunately, I don't think her mother knows how to handle "black" hair since she is of another persuasion. :ohwell:

I agree, a good moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner will do wonders for her. They have to put some sort of oil in her hair to combat the dryness and frizzyness. Poor thing. :(

I think this is the same show I saw a few weeks ago and afterwards sent them an angry e-mail. They TR'd this child's hair! I thought she was 6 yrs old, so this may have been a different show... If the family can't handle a simple poo/cond and ponytails, how are they going to be able to manage two different textures? :nono:

Why is the solution always straight hair? All this kid needed was a good deep conditioner, a wide tooth comb and a creamy leave-in.
