Ladies, I am so distraught it hurts. Last night I took out some box plaits I had put in 6 weeks ago. I pre-pooed and washed, including a clarifying shampoo. My hair was so tangled it was RIDICULOUS!!! I ended up spending 1 1/2 hours watching my hair come out as I combed out the knots.

My hair is ruined. All the thickness and quite a bit of the length I've acquired during the last few months is gone. I cried for an hour this morning. I mean hard, pounding tears. I lost almost all my ponytail (which wasn't that hot too begin with). But it was getting full, and it looks someone snatched my hair out.

Any advice? I guess I'll be wearing wigs and phony ponies till I can get some of this hair back. Pray for me ya'll b/c I am completely depressed over this.

This exact thing happen to me. I was doing the C&G method. my box braids where only in 7 weeks. i have fine 4a/b hair. I know how you feel! but i will grow back i promise!! I havent gotten braids since. I have been wearing half wigs and it has made a BIG difference!

You may want to try the braids again.

I used to lose so much har, but I started taking then down in a different way and the hair loss stopped. My hair did so well (until i screwed it up by getting a weave  )

I started cutting off the excess, you know the part that is all extension hair that is braided past you own.

Then I SOAKED my hair in CON ultra moisturizing and massaged it in down to the length of the braids. Then I stood in the shower and let the water "rinse" the braids off.

my hair did so much better after that!

It seems to not work as well if you let them use a lighter/fire on your braids as they do sometimes.

Tell the braiders not to use any fire on your hair!!! Just clip them with scissors to make them neat.

Also keep them really moist while you have them in, that helps with take down. I would even use WAY MORE extra moisture 5-7 days before take down to help.

Thanks all. I appreciate your responses. I think I will hold off on braids for a while. I mentally need to get back on track. But I won't write them off forever, but will do the growafrohairlong.com version for taking them out next time.

I am going to the hair shop tomorrow. I am going to purchase one or two wigs and/or half wigs. I am also going to look for a a nice looking drawstring ponytail. I am going to make an MTG replica and get back on track.

I will be popping some vitamins and drinking water till I pee like a fountain. I WANT MY HAIR BACK!!!!

I almost always have massive tangles when removing my braids. Rule #1 is no combing. Robin has a method for seriously tangled takedowns that works very well. Have you seen that yet? Hang on let me find it... http://www.growafrohairlong.com/takingoutplaits.html. Sometimes I had to remove 1 strand of hair from the tangle at a time, gently. I guess that's for future reference 'cause it's not going to help you now.

I'd put them back in until it grew back. Braids broken my hair off for years and years. It would grow sometimes to almost BSL and gradually break to SL. I had no idea why my hair was breaking. I thought it was stress. But as odd as it may sound the one thing that broke it off was the best at growing it out. Anyway, I'm really sorry. :(

I'm sorry! The same thing just happened to me too girly, all that thickness and some of the length I had just went into the trash. I lost over threee golf ball sized wads of hair. But I'm still hopeful/nervous about the future. Currently I'm washing with shampoo twice a week, CO washes in between when needed and moisturizing twice a day.

yup last time i had braids i lost loads of hair and my already thin hair became paper thin i just did protective styles for about 6 weeks and used mtg and eventually my hair returned back to normal

The same thing happened to me about three months ago, but my hair is recovering nicely. I'll give you the password to my fotki if you pm me and I'll show you what I mean.

This is the reason I stopped getting braids put in. I just stick with buns and phonytails and my hair loves me for it.

I sooo feel your pain

I have lost alot of hair while taking out weave. I have cried too...you have to be really careful. Dont put too much braid spray if you relax your hair....dont leave hair in for more than 6 weeks in my case anyway. Make sure you comb out all knotts before shampoo and condition.

Keep in mind that you may have lost alot of dead hair too!....dont be too sad....your hair will grow back!.....this happened to me last few months ago...and now my hair has recovered...it may look worse if you have different textures too...

Sorry this happened to you. :(

Braids are not the problem it's the care of them.

It sounds like you got product build up at the roots. Did you spray to moisturize or did you do the sponge moisturize (Robin's) way? I find glycerin based products tangle my hair very badly..imagine how it would be in braids after 6 weeks....eeek...lol.
I'm finding the sponge moisturize way is awesome. Soft hair and no buildup. And I do the sea breeze way too. Over 3 weeks and clean scalp and no buildup. It's taken me over 10 years of braiding to get my act together.

Try it again but be careful what you apply daily. Btw, did you detangle very well before washing?

I'm happy to help any in braids who need help (even down to saving your hairline). It's a great way to get length if done right.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I just lost more hair than I thought I should when I took my sew-in weave out. If you do try braids again I would follow growafrohairlong.com and wash and moisturize. Don't put too much spray near the scalp. Also don't leave them in too long. A month is good in my opinion. Usually the problem isn't the growth, its the tangling and lack of moisture on the ends. As for me I've given up on weaves. Alot of women right here have grown their hair long with out weaves and braids. Rememeber it everything doesn't work for everyone.

So do you wash your hair when in braids. Because I am also on the crown and glory challenge, and I would love all the tips in preventing buildup. I wash weekly with diluted shampoo, and when the braids stop dripping I spray on the Infusium 23 in conjunction w/ African Royale braid spray. How often do you mosturize, and with what?

I am currently following the C&G method and I agree with HoneyDew. When you take down your braids don't comb, wash and then detangle. I also noticed the smaller the braid the more nots you have(atleast in my experience) I wear medium sized braids and they are alot easier to take down than the itty bitty ones.

I am trying a new thing since I used to get sooooo much buildup which means lots of hair gone. I am doing th seabreeze thing. Every day I pour some sea breeze (or some astringent) into a bowl and using a sponge I clean my scalp thoroughly. I know it's working for me because if it wasn't I would get bumps on my scalp...which I get when I go more than a 2 weeks past washing. My scalp is bump free and moisturized. I know some won't care for this but my hair is thriving and scalp is looking good. My hair has is growing and the roots are dirt free.

On the braids I also moisturize using a sponge. I squeeze the moisturizer into the braid..about 1/2" away from the roots. I'm using Rehydrating Mist by Eqyss(sp?). After that is gone I'll finish up my Surge. Then after that back to my Giovanni Vitapro Fusion. Anything that doesn't have a huge glycerin base works for me. I moisturize every day or every other day. This sponge way of doing it actually keeps the hair more hydrated than just spraying it. I'm able to get to all my hair this way. And it means nothing on my neck or face (which then give me zits).

Girl I feel 4 u. did you detangle b4 you washed...if not that is the problem and a huge no no. When I remove braids I do a few at a time and then spray with the braid remover spray and detangle that section, until I finish my whole head. I then shampoo and wash. I would not pre-poo after taking down braids either I think it would be unecessary since you will have buildup from the braids.

Hi,

same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I decided to start fresh and cut ear length. I will never braid my hair again. try wearing braid/twist out.
