Has anyone grown their hair out while having breakage?

I'm talking light breakage, not the breakage where you touch your hair and there is hair all over your hands or on the sink. I'm not alarmed, but I keep trying everything to get to 0 breakage, and it only happens on wash days where I'm manipulating my hair and I get tiny tiny c shapes mixed in with my shed hairs.

Now, I have a lot of course strands and my hair is very dense so I'm thinking it's maybe impossible to have 0 considering I'm not a protective style wearer a lot... I wear plaits and twists but then I will my hair out when I take thIem down. When I say I have a lot of hair, I'm talking still struggling to put my hair into a ponytail at 2 years natural because it's just freakin' bulky...

When I was relaxed I had way more shedding, but I still managed to get to APL before going natural and I didn't know it was such a bad thing until I visited hair boards.

I've gone from using all natural products, to cg method, to using what works... My hair type is 3c/4a.

I've started using a wide tooth comb on my hair because I was getting matting and ssks galore doing the no comb method. I notice less hair loss combing my hair, but I'm going to invest in a seamless one...

Sorry for ranting, but I'm hoping for advice here. So, does anyone here have great growth progess while also having some breakage of their ends on wash day?

me. my hair breaks all the time. I just chalk it down to having textured hair.

I try to remember my mom doing WAY more than i ever do to my hair on a DAILY basis, and somehow that stuff was a good thickness, length and errthing.

everyone is diff't and try not to compare, but don't let the ads manipulate you. all the no break cream and conditioner in the world won't keep fibers from splitting or breaking.

happy growing.

you'll see what i use in my siggie. lately i have been doing an offbase "shingling" routine that works really well, if you don't get too freaked out about seeing the hair you shed come out in your hands/comb in lieu of down the drain [out of sight/out of mind]

Yeah, I get breakage on wash day. Some breakage is to be expected despite the best efforts to get rid of it. Hair is not made of steel. When you have breakage just by looking at the hair or large amounts for no reason then that is a cause for alarm.

I was just confused, because I looked for some thread about breakage and some people were saying they only get 1-2 broken hairs...

If, it's not little tiny peices you are fine...long hairs are okay because our hair sheds daily and depending on how long you keep your hair hidden in PS you will see wayyyy more hair shedding but yea, little peices of hair is not good. What size comb do you use on your hair? Just curious to know.

Yes, I have had lots of growth in the last year and a half, even with manipulation breakage. I just take it in stride, and try to keep it to a minimum with lots of moisture and very little use of styling tools when possible. People tend to forget that our hair was biologically designed to break in order to keep our heads cool in the hot climate of our motherland, so you are going to get breakage no matter what you do to your hair. Whether it's a lot or a little is pretty much the only thing you can mitigate, especially for us type 4 girls. I made it from APL to MBL in one year with consistent, but minimal, breakage, without suffering extreme thinning in areas or my ends. I believe you can too, you just have to keep your moisture balance game on point, and you should be fine. :yep:

I would safely guess that 99.9% of the long haired population grew their hair out while having breaking . This issue comes with having the same amount or more breakage than hair growth. As long as your hair breaks less than it grows, you'll see length :yep:. Having a little breakage only on wash day is a good sign. A lot of people see breakage daily for various reasons. I can't dry style my hair or do twists/twistouts because I get so much breakage during these times. Yet, when I do wash n'gos, I get no breakage until the little I have on wash day :yep:.

Considering the average healthy head has 100,000 hairs, I try not to worry about a couple dozen broken ones on wash days.

I think 0 might be possible on type 1s and 2s but past that, just let it slide.

I use a wide tooth comb. And it says you're relaxed so I think in terms of breakage we experience it for different reasons.

I get C shaped breakage every few months. The breakage starts happening, lasts for a few weeks and then it won't break so bad after a while. But still I've grown my hair from above shoulder length to armpit length in a year. It's possible. Just give your hair lots of TLC and monitor your breakage for outrageous splits and fallen strands.

I have. I baby my hair and I'll still see some of those little wispys. It isn't a sink, floor, and shoulders covered full like it used to be when I had no clue about hair care but they are there sometimes. I still retain length so I don't worry about it.
