I have been wearing a wig since September 2008. So far I feel like I am able to retain a lot of length because of it. However, if there are any drawbacks I would like to know before I wear it for the next six months. Thanks in advance.
The combs. Be careful of the combs. They can cause breakage that'll just sneak up on you.
If I were you I would cut them out completely and just use large bobby pins (the ones called wrap pins, they're the most comfortable). It stays on just as well...I never felt like there was slippage or anything like that.
At the very least, cover the combs with castor oil. Since it's thick it really helps them slide in. And, puts a little bit of a layer between the combs and your hair. Other than the combs, I had no problems when wearing my wigs.
For me I would have to say it was my edges suffered. I moisturize daily yet they would always break, so now for the next year I will be wig free. And I do think it was more so the wig caps giving me the breakage as opposed to the actual wigs.
Subscribing. I just started wearing wigs last month, but I knew after a couple wears that I did not like the way my hair looked after I wore the combs, so the only thing that makes contact with my hair is a thin satin scarf and a stocking cap goes over that. Credit to the BHM wig forum for that advice. This only works now because it's cold where I am. This might be too much after April.
The wig I bought doesn't have a comb (thankfully) but I found the wig cap to be really drying so I quit wearing it. I just wrap my hair and put the wig over it. There are straps in the wig that come together and snap at the nape of my neck so I have no problems with it staying on and have had no problems with breakeage at my nape.
I always keep my hair really moisturized and haven't had any problems so far.
