Has anyone been to Aveda Beauty School?

I made an appointment now I'm scared. Just need a little encouragement.:look:

I have never been, but I was going to go to the School for color since I heard great stuff about Aveda color. And then I cancelled.

But I had a friend who wanted color and I told him to go to Aveda about a month ago...not the Beauty School, because he didn't want anyone new/inexperienced putting his color on. So he found a salon with great reviews and they said they did african american hair. A black woman applied his highlights the first time and she was suppose to be very experienced. It looked bad, girl. Sorry. Like bozo color...very orange. I was shocked when I saw it and glad as heck that I cancelled! :lachen:

He went back a couple of days later and the manager did the correction. His hair was dry as heck from all the color, but he liked it much better. He went back yesterday for a retouch of the roots and the manager messed up his color...orange AGAIN! He's going back in an hour to get ANOTHER correction. And said he will never get color again.

This is probably very isolated, because everyone seems to swear by Aveda color. But my friend got orange lookin' streaks twice.

If I were gonna go for it, it would be with someone who I can see has done the exact thing i want on someone with hair like mine.

Knowing what he's gone thru has made me rethink any hasty color decisions without serious planning.

If you are very afraid, I think you can pay an extra $15 to have your hair done by a Master. I think that is someone who is about to graduate or has already graduated.

I used to work at one - you'll be fine. The teachers always hover, and if you don't like it you can request a redo.

I used to go for my color--I've never had problems. Once got a sketchy style, but she was learning, and a student, what do I expect? Another time the student stylist did a great job.

If the school were in my city, I'd be going more often.

Ok, my friend just got back from having his color corrected at Aveda and he said they did it perfectly. So, even if they don't get it right the first time, they will do it over. He said they used a special conditioner on his hair and it's very soft now.

Actually, I had my hair done by the school about 3 or 4 months ago and I loved it. I got a wash, blow-dry & curl. And a white student did my hair! She didn't know alot about African-American hair texture, so she had to ask one of the instructors who was African-American and she helped her along. But after she finished, my hair was silky straight and flowing and the service was inexpensive. I have an appointment today actually. I was planning to go in for a press-n-go because I'm 20 weeks post relaxer, trying to stretch it to 24 weeks. (Y'all pray for me, b/c I might just succomb and get that darn relaxer touch up! :lick:)

What are you getting done?

I had a double process color done and wasn't too pleased. My color was done by a master with a lot of supervision from the instructor. I went for a consultation and went back the next day to get it colored.

I STRESSED that I DID NOT want black or orange hair (I wanted dark brown all over with blond peek-a-boo highlights)... and I got black and orange hair. Well they tried to convince me it was a chocolate brown and warm blond... you be the judge:

I was just so disappointed in the outcome because we discussed it so much. The placement of the highlights was off too. I also said, as she was foiling, that I didn't want the "blond" to show from the front... she ignored my request and said "trust me." The front of my hair came out looking like Elvira.

They refused to bleach my hair to get it to the blond I wanted...fine it's more important for me to keep my curl pattern. The dark brown I requested is closer to jet black than anything else...okay, it'll fade over time.

The icing on the cake regarding the entire experience is that the stylist (3C natural) could not style my hair. She didn't even comb it and when I said that she said "I didn't feel any knots in it." I got out of the sink with my afro out with all it's glory and she started slapping gel and other crap in it. I told her to stop, I ALWAYS style my hair. I was going to the club later and I was not about to look like a frizz ball. If I ever rock a wash and go, I use my denman to help my hair clump. She said the shop would close in an hour so she didn't have time to heat style it (okay...not professional but I let that slide). We went back to the sink for her to wet it again and she says she'll twist my hair... She starts grabbing random pieces of hair and twisting the ends loosely. All I could think of was how many dred locks I would find in my hair on wash day. Then, another stylist comes over (really thin relaxed head) and says "why don't you just slap more gel and stuff in it and scrunch it, it will curl on its own." That was it for me, I had the product rinsed out again and I left. I was at a friends house (without my products) so I had to flat iron my hair.

Would I go there again...no. They were in no way knowledgeable about styling natural hair, even though the stylist had natural hair herself. She didn't listen to me. She didn't pay attention to detail. (I asked that she not put any color in my edges b/c they are thin. She moved the highlights back on the right side of my head but stuck them right at my hairline on the left side of my head.) She didn't take into account how my natural hair color would respond to the box color.

There are bad experiences across all types of salons (my friend got her hair cut at a trendy salon in an upper class neighborhood and the stylist at a mall pointed out that one side of her hair was a full 3 inches longer than the other, lol). I just couldn't get over how I gave specific instructions and not one was followed. Maybe I'm just too picky.

Sorry for using this as a platform to vent but just giving my honest opinion of the service... HTH.

African Americans have to be careful with certain colors and certain products/brands of color......I have seen an experienced person mess up someone's hair before on someone who's had color done on their hair....Its part expertise and its part product/brand IMO. Especially with our hair type......This particular shop may have been out of their league....however they may have had great results on another AA's hair and felt confident...Also could have been his color choice....

As far was with Aveda, we have a school in town and its 50/50. Some people (white, black and latina) love it, others hate it.....
