OK.. I cut several inches last night (transitioning) because I was getting sick of the tangled bone straight ends. I'm now b/t SL & APL, which is cool with me b/c my hair feels soooo much thicker and healthier. The only problem is, as I straightened my new growth the first inch from the scalp was so crunchy YUCK :wallbash:

I air dried, which is a mistake b/c my hair is always a little harder & drier than if I sit under the dryer. Not sure why but it doesn't like it. I conditioned w/ 2min aphogee & GVP Conditioning balm.

It was shedirific:crybaby:, since it had been in corn rolls for 2+ weeks while I wore a wig (which I don't think my hair likes). I did conditioner washes 2x a week but my hair was still a tangled mess when I took it down. Makes it hard to transition b/c braid outs & twist outs will bring my hair out in clumps. Tangles galore... no matter what I put in it. SO I should be spanked :spank:for trying to wear them for so long (topic for another day... just wanted to vent a little)

Back to last night.....I put in NTM and Chi, let it dry then straightened. Everything came out great except that NG closest to my scalp. I rubbed some coconut oil on it this morning, which is helping but it's not 100% soft.

Any suggestions, as I don't want to have silky hair and crunchy @#$ roots after every wash.

I really want to be on my game this year.:boxing:

First, congratulations on moving closer to your hair goals! Cutting ends happens all the time, but it still takes courage for each individual to take that step. You have done that!

For the crunchy roots, you may want to consider doing a pre-poo. I like to use a olive oil/aloe vera (100%) mix for that to soften. This may soften your roots. Or, it may be too greasy for you.

Today, if I let my hair dry with no leave in, it will dry very hard and crunchy, even if I deep conditioned it. I feel that my hair is very healthy. My point in mentioning this is that dry hard roots don't automatically equate to something being wrong. Your roots are coming in strong and healthy.

Perhaps a leave-in product to soften may be beneficial. The other ladies will chime in on some more specific products and recommendations. Hopefully they will post something soon!

Thanks.... I've been fretting over cutting my hair for the past couple of months. DH wanted me to hang in there, but what's the point in having hair approaching BSL that looks thin and unhealthy. I feel much better b/c I like the way in looks even if it is shorter.

Per your suggestion, I'll have to try this on the next wash.... I have oils (jojoba, grapeseed, etc...) but they are way too greasy to leave in my hair but a pre-poo just might do the trick. I'll get the aloe vera and mix them together and give it a try.

Thanks for making me feel better.... I was really disappointed with my roots and worried something might be wrong!!

By the way...your hair is simply gorgeous:yep:

bumping.... all these hair divas on the board and no other suggestions????
Come on ladies

Pretty please????

Chicoro gave you some really good advice on the pre-poo with the oils, and I have also found that being faithful with the deep conditioning helped to tame my NG as well.

When I first started my transition, I thought that the unruly NG was going to be the death of me because it grew in sooo crunchy and no matter what I did, it felt hard and wiry. I had always deep conditioned, but when I started co-washing, I slacked off on the dc'ing. (I just didn't feel like going through all those steps). But my hair was quick to let me know.

Congrats on getting rid of some of the relaxed ends. The biggest mini trim I ever got was when I got about 4-5 inches trimmed off at one time in April 2008. I still have so many relaxed ends to go (10 inches), but I can't get rid of them right now because my bun has been my life saver.

Good luck on your transition.
