I'm new here, and please excuse me if someone has already pointed it out. But have you guys seen Hairoil.com today? Gone is the photo of Beverly Johnson. And check out what they say on the "About us" page.
Just thought that it was interesting that they said that they have become the top black hair care site through Google. I have visited the page for years, and remember when Wanakee first began the whole thing. That was back when I had cut my hair down to two inches all over, and began growing my hair back out. I never bought their products, and don't think I ever will. Too expensive. But I think their hair care tips are excellent, and they have enabled me to grow my hair to bra-strap legnth. Also thought it was interesting that they have added their Styling guide, and some other info. that I don't remember them posting before.
That's funny I was wondering the same thing for a while now. I really thought at one time that she actually created those products. Also, I wonder if her hair is still that long. It was quite beautiful and that booklet with her pic on it was very inspiring.
21. I went to Wanakee's website (when it was Wanakee's webite) and I saw that she contradicts you in a lot of ways. She claims that you must trim your hair and wear your hair in "protective styles" in order to achieve hair growth. I already know your view about this, but aren't you more experienced than her? I mean, you DID research and everything, so where is Wanakee getting her information from?
Wanakee is a beautiful black model with waist length hair (which looks to be type 3 instead of type 4) that for many years was used as a celebrity model to sell products created by a company called HairOil.com (the website was then under Wanakee.com). The products even carried her name making people believe they were products she created and used and they helped her get her long beautiful hair. Sistahs bought it thinking she had some majic in the products to make her hair grow like that. (a marketing ploy used since before Madame CJ Walkers times) A small pamphlet was put together that was given away free that said trimming was necessary for the hair to grow! Obviously she was not knowledgeable about hair to suggest that trimming has anything to do with hair growth. Beverly Johnson is currently HairOil.coms celebrity and according to a page on their website, they have cut ties with her now and are removing her name from the products. It was quite humorous to use Beverly Johnson because everybody knows Beverly Johnson wears wigs! Now sistahs are mad because they thought Wanakee used these products! People know we want hair and they will sell you what you will buy. Wanakee did NO research nor product development. She was just another celebrity model that was used to market a product based on her looks and celebrity status and people bought into.
How does Cathy know this? Wanakee also had a host of progression pictures to go along with her story. So Cathy is saying that Wanakee lied about being the company's founder? How does she know all this?
Verifen customer service says Wanakee sold her interest in the company to devote time to her ministry. I don't know if she developed the products or if she was just a spokesmodel and neither does Howse. Some people on this board have met Wanakee. I think she told them she helped develop the products... I do think it's strange that they still have the stories about the grandmother, etc. on the site (At least they did the last time I looked). I always thought they were Wanakee's stories as opposed to ad copy. It wouldn't surprise me, though. They are in business to make $$$. So is Howse. They will do and say anything.
In another thread someone mentioned that Wanakee attended one of Howse's seminars, asked a bunch of questions and then came out with her own product line. If that's true, that could explain Howse's remarks.
Hairoil.com needs to add, "Whatever happened to Wanakee?" to the FAQ!

This said : according to a page on their website, they have cut ties with her now and are removing her name from the products.
If that's on thier website, then it would be Thier quote right???
Besides, Models For Christ explains Wanakee's start as hair model and Hooversonline, explains ownership, ceo, etc for Verifen Products. Sassy, if you get a chance ck it out. It's not that one "knows all sees all" It's called RESEARCH.
I don't hate her. I don't know her and she isn't that important to me. But I do hate the way she feels she has to "expose" people in order to sell her products and to make herself look more knowledgeable. What does selling her own products have to do with what goes on at hairoil.com? Hairoil.com doesn't mention her or any of their competitors on their site.
So she dug up some dirt on the true ownership of the company. Now what? The products aren't any good because Wanakee didn't own it?
Yeah, Cathy can come of as a little harsh, self-righteous and all knowing. Her method is obviously working for a lot of people so she should let is sell itselve instead of degrading and putting other competitors down.
I was almost a customer of Cathy's, getting reading to buy her book until I read the entire website and her negative approach helped me change my mind. That is when I found this site.
And although Wanakee may not have been the inventor of the products that doesn't change the fact that they are working for a lot of people.
Pandora, my sentiments exactly, how did this turn into another CH thread. I think the poster (Jubiliee) , posted something she thought helpful on the subject, and as usual, bitter snide remarks (unjustified snide remarks), I think the posters howse reply was very complimentive, saying she is beautiful, etc but of course those that would see evil, will do so in anything.
I saw nothing sarcastic in it, so I'm really not sure what "usual manner" was. But anyway can we please stop beatin a dead horse. What people think of her is not hurting her the program sells itself. I think and someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, the only negative thing said about Wanakee was from USERS of the product.

I agree with you on this ...it's her motives and tactics(Cathy) that I don't like...
As far as I'm concerned if a product works well no matter where I brought it s what is important to me....but truthfully...Cathy could make the best products in the world...and I wouldn't purchase them. Also on here web site she quotes 'common sense'...like the average consumer doesn't know any better. To me just because you aren't aware of all the ways of caring for your hair properly does not mean you have no commom sense...and I take offense to it. God doesn't like ugly and I'm a firm believer in what goes around comes around... if her products are so good then they will sell on their own merit...not on what her competitors are or are not doing.

DITTO!!!
I dont believe you need to bash another company on order to promote your own.
Her attitude and overall tone on her website is very unprofessional.
BTW Wanakee met with a chemist who created products specifically for HER own hair and its needs. It wasnt just some bulk generic product that she just slapped her name on.
Like someone else posted above she sold the company to go into the ministry.

I found this review of Wanakee/Hair Oil.Com in "Don't Go Shopping for Hair Care Products Without Me" by Paula Begoun. (2nd edition 2000)
"...they (hair care products) are suppose to contain something called Verifen, a complex that can make long straight hair dreams come true. The ingredients in the products are the same as those found in hundreds of products made by other lines. What this line does have that makes it different from many African-American haircare lines are far fewer greasy, oily products. To that extent, it is far better for African-American hair. However, nothing in these products makes them better than any other product for extremely dry/fine/thin hair or problems that result from hair straightening and styling."
Here's what the author has to say about two of the most popular products:
Constant Care for Ends - just thickeners and Vaseline. This greasy wax can help extremely dry hair, though be careful- it can look and feel greasy. Plus, this is alot of money for Vaseline and wax.
Hairline Essential Creme - standard styling cream that has light to medium hold. Contains mostly water, conditioning agent, film former, thickeners, preservatives, Vaseline, mineral oil, vitamins, and fragrance.
She gives the product line a satisfactory rating. Her website is www.cosmeticcop.com.

I didn't think her response was sarcastic. By "usual manner" I meant putting herself over.
@ Jubilee:
Apparently someone asked Howse where Wanakee got her hair care info from. Somehow the answer degenerated into Wanakee not owning the company and not using the products.
My question is: Why would someone ask Cathy Howse questions about Wanakee? Why would that person expect Howse to know if and how Wanakee did any research? That would be like asking Cover Girl questions about the business practices of Fashion Fair.
@ Valleygirl:
It makes sense that Wanakee would consult a chemist for mass producing the products. I'm sure she didn't keep stearalkonium chloride and propylene glycol in her kitchen cabinet!

Your so graspin it's funny
Why do people ask thier stylist questions? I ask my stylist about products/haircare items all the time. What would one ask a haircare expert about, foot washin..
We ask questions here about everything to do with haircare, do we expect that folks have researched? LOL Your funny sassy.
Grasping? What am I grasping for? I think it's a legitimate question.
A stylist is expected to know about hair products. People on a hair care discussion board are expected to discuss hair care products. But I wouldn't expect a stylist or anyone on this board to know how a specific company does it's research. I know how the pwople at lhcf do the majority of their research: on their own heads. When we want to find out about a specific company's business practices we contact them directly. Would you e-mail Cathy Howse to find out if Mizani Moisturfuse was being bootlegged? How is it "grasping" to wonder why someone would contact Cathy Howse about someone else's research? Apparently you know something I don't...
IMO, that person would have been better off contacting hairoil.com or Wanakee herself.
The weird part about HairOil is that when I used her products, I achieved growth really fast. I just couldn't keep up with the prices. I have 4 girls ( 2 with long hair) & the prices were overwhelming.
ITA. Those prices are through the roof... As much as I loved Wanakee's hair and went to that site for inspiration, I couldn't bring myself to shell out that much dough until last year. I'm glad I waited. I wasn't overly impressed with the products.
I'm glad they worked for you, though. If the deep conditoner and the CC for Ends were cheaper, I'd probably keep buying them.
Yeah, I would in fact I have asked about Avlon Products. While she would'nt know everything, I think that particular customer felt that a noted author, and receipient of the "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in the World", might be up on thier research, in thier field.
