I have chelated once or twice along the way in my hair journey. But, I live in a soft water area so there is no need for that. I clarify and DC monthly.
I use a mud wash to chelate. My hair tends to be dry and the mud wash seems safer to me than trying to use a shampoo. It doesn't dry my hair out and it smooths it out so it is easy to manage.
So I would say I use a modified process, 4 out of 5 steps every other month.
I use a clay shampoo to detox. Bobeams Cocoa Rhassoul is my favorite, followed by her ACV and Bentonite clay bar. As a matter of fact, im supposed to be placing an order. Lemme head on over there..
I've been using a chelator for years (once I learned that water could leave behind mineral deposits); and after its initial introduction, I immediately noticed that it:
- Helped eliminate my chronic dryness - Added softness and sheen - Improved the efficacy of products (most of the DCs I tried sucked until I began chelating regularly)
I love chelators for their ability to provide a clean slate that enables oils, nutrients and conditioning agents to work more effectively, thereby giving lasting results.
I don't chelate but I do clarify. I live in NY where we have soft water so if its not a chelator/clarifier or a swimmers shampoo (which aren't that easy to find) you can't really find them here. I've seen chelators on shelves with so much dust, you can't see them.
I chelate once a week, for the water in Northern Virginia is not only very hard, it is highly chlorinated. You can smell the chlorine once you turn on the faucet!
