Does anyone own this book? If so, how does it compare to things you learn here on LHCF?

I have had the book for about 2 years and I really liked it. I think that it provides a good hair care foundation, especially if you are relaxing or plan on relaxing. There are quite a few things I disagree with, such as his advocacy of daily heat use, but overall I would recommend the book.

I read it before I found LHCF. No need to buy it though IMO, you are here now. He tells you to deep condition, protien, moisturize and use nexxus. If you do a search on shamboosie there should be several threads. I found the book useful when I was clueless, but the information here is far more comprehensive.

yes, i agree. don't buy the book. research here. The crux: don't use no-lye. If you use no-lye (stop now) and start to moisturize/moisturize, the moisturize he recommends is nexxus humect. on a weekly basis.

if you use lye then protein/moisturize.

I'd have a hard time buying a book written by somebody named "Shamboosie".:look:

But seriously, from what I've heard of his book (on LHCF), all he does is push "the basics" and advocate the use of Nexxus products. I think the $5 spent on LHCF is more useful than that!

I agree with Jazzydez. I was clueless and desperate. I purchased the book and it got the PJ in me going. I ended up purchasing many Nexxus products. This is not a bad thing, its just that I was still a little lost as to why my hair was breaking off so much. After finding LHCF, I was able to tell the difference between needing protein or moisture. There is way more information here and I have saved so much money using natural products and vitamins that actually work.

Not a bad book though, it just doesnt compare to LHCF IMO.

You took the words, right out my mouth!!!!!:wink2:

It was helpful to me. I read it back when I was first trying to get my hair on track back in 2003. I had left it in a number of stylists hands and saw no progress. It provided me with a good place to start (he put me onto nexxus humectress ) and then I found this board 2 yrs later. If you want to read it, you can always check it out at the public library. I wouldn't buy it though. There's way more info here on this board than in that book.

Thanks for the responses. It got some good reviews on the Black Expressions site and I was gonna grab it with the 5 for $2 deal they're doing but now I won't seeing there's nothing helpful in it that isn't on the site. ;)

I have never read the book but I have other books that I love and follow in addition to LHCF. If someone is clueless about what to use and when to use it. I would say a book would be helpful. When I first joined this board. I learned about protein treatments, deep conditioning, hot oil treatments, conditioner washes, etc. But the thing was I didn't know how or when to apply these products and everytime I posted a question on how to use this and when to use that. I didn't get any responses so I had all these products that the ladies raved about but didn't know how to use them or when to use them. That's when I purchased "The Black Woman's Guide To Beautiful, Healthier Hair in 6 Weeks" by Carolyn Gray. Her book showed me how and when to use all the wonderful products the ladies on here raved about. Therefore, I was able to quickly get my regimen on point and grow some healthy long hair. I first bought UBH book(can't remember her name right now) but it didn't help. Then I purchased Carolyn Gray's book (my favorite) and this past christmas I purchased another book by Nicole Smith (I like and incorporate some of her techniques into my regimen). This Shamboosie book is the next on my list. I agree LHCF is the best source but if you don't know how to incorporate all your products into a regimen. I recommend Carolyn Gray's book. She basically uses everything we use on here she just tells you when to use it.HTH:)

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked the section color. But it's all on htis site anyway. I was really annoyed at the way he pusched certain products: Only Nexxus and Dudleys. I was really put off by the way he kept pushing "the magic potion" I feel that if yu are writing a hair care book, you should talk about ingredients and not specific products. and he should have had more pictures of the how-tos. that is my major complaint about all the hair books.

Two years ago, when I was completely clueless and had cut my hair short for the millionth time, I found Shamboosie's book. I started using Nexxus products and following the regimine he outlined. Two years later (right now) I went from the Halle short cut to about an inch below shoulder length. Not bad - but breakage never stopped.

I found this site about 2 months ago and I have learned more for 5 dollars than I ever could have learned from the book. My hair has grown at least a half inch and the breakage has completely stopped. Before I found LHCF, I was heatstyling daily.

The book never got over to me the MANY reasons that my hair was suffering but instead went on about a "magic potion" Nexxus Humectress.

Now, I DO still love my Nexxus but it was breaking the bank! I have learned lower cost ways to get the same or better results.......All that to say LHCF is the far better value.

Thanks! I appreciate it, I'll look for that one. You expressed my main reason for wanting a hair book, something I can just refer to, anytime, anywhere. I think the fact that you can get real life product reviews and experiences from women is invaluable, but my own little instructional in combination wouldn't hurt either.

I'm glad I could help. LHCF is the best source for hair care but a book would help to put your regimen in order. I know it helped me because I was confused as hayl when I first joined. This book has really helped me:) :)

Bottom line: If you already found LHCF there is no need to look anywhere else for info

I agree!!! But it is nice to have something hair related to read while you sit under the dryer. :) I like Carolyn Gray's book.

What I don't like about Shamboosie's book is that he seems to be like a advertiser for nexxus. THERE ARE OTHER PRODUCTS!! But he swears that you MUST use nexxus. I hate that!!! Also, he focuses a lot on color. I think his color section was just T.M.I.

I purchased his book also about 3-4 years ago-before finding this site. His book really did nothing for me, I brought the Nexxus products and they are still in my bathroom closet. The Nexxus products did nothing for my hair. I also need a how to guide on when to apply all the products mentioned on this site. My hair has gone from one extreme to another. Right now it is in a very non growing way and sheds constantly. It feels hard and brittle and will not retain moisture. So I am just taking it day by day. I can not afford the better products that are mentioned here, and the ones that I have tried-just did not work for me. I think I will purchase the Carolyn Gray book and sit under the dryer.:perplexed

I just looked up the Carolyn Gray book on amazon.com and she hails from my home town, Augusta, GA.!! I guess I need to buy her book-She good people!:D

I didn't find it all that useful, and my hair didn't care for the Nexxus products, but that could have been because I put some creme press from Dudley in it (as per his recommendation) and messed it all up! My hair was swole with me for a good 6 months before it forgave me! :(

I won't get rid of the book because I don't want anyone else to get the mediocre advice and tips he has to offer.

ITA with the other ladies that LHCF is much, much better!

Don't buy this book! I tried several of his recommendations and they weren't helpful. His best tip was to DC regularly but I knew that from hair boards, plus he is pretty anti-hair boards.

I read his book but I was already using Nexxus products as a staple and I love using no-lye relaxers and self-relaxing. I agreed with some things he wrote but I learned so much more at LHCF and my own experiences.
