Hi there,

I've been natural for 5 years yet my hair has remained armpit length for the last three. I've trimmed my hair several times thinking the reason I'm not seeing growth is the ends but it hasn't made a difference at all. When I detangle with my fingers I see hair breakage although the majority is shedding but I didn't think it was anything excessive but my hair hasn't grown and I've cut it again to collar bone length. My shedding is very minimal. Can you please advise me with any tips ? Or what the problem say be ? I understand there must be a maintenance of moisture and protein but I really don't think I have it and I don't know how to get it. Also does anyone know of a good natural hair salon in London because my hair is really frustrating me I don't know what to do anymore and I've tried everything. Is some breakage normal ? Or should I just cut all my hair off and start again ?

Some breakage is normal especially when manipulating the hair. You have to find a protein and moisture conditioner that your hair responds to. That's why it's called a hair journey because you will go through a journey. Your hair might not like hard protein and might like medium protein or vise versa. Maybe you haven't found the perfect products for your hair. Word of advice, buy from stores you can easily get a refund or exchange if that's the store you mostly go to so you won't waste money.

Do you moisturize and seal? How often? How often you wash your hair or Co wash? Is your hairs really coil that it wraps around orders no matter what? How often you deep condition or do protein treatments?

Buy a shower filter and a chelating shampoo to get all of the mineral build up out of your hair. It is my understanding that London has hard water.

OP,

It seems your fed up. Maybe you should get some C&G braids for a couple of weeks until you feel a little better? It's usually oll advised to get braids while your hair is super breaking but always better than you literally pulling your hair out.

As far as your breakage, you might have to get a little scientific. There are several reasons for breakage - manipulation, moisture/protein balance is off, porous hair, hard water, build-up. I'm sure there are others but I can't list it out. The below are some questions you should ask yourself while on your journey

A chelating shampoo will help you solve the hard water and build-up problem.

M/P balance - Are your ends OK? Do you have split ends? Do you get SSK's very often, Do you cowash often? Your hair may be naturally brittle - do you have fine hair or protein sensitive hair? Your hair should feel strong but elastic when wet and dry.

Manipulation - Do you wash weekly? Are you gentle? how do you handle your hair? Is the breakage in a certain area? Do you have uniform texture? If you don't you may have to handle the textures differently.
