Hello everyone! well i have a question. I have realized consistently that everytime I put my braids in and take them out my hair is full and beautiful but then when they raent in braids for awhile it starts to break. I hardly ever use the hot iron and i fell i take pretty good care of my hair. My older sister attritubed this to previous occuring breakage and her advice was to cut of the part that keeps breaking but i dont know if i should take that route.I got my braids done yeasterday so thats bye bye to my hair for another 2-3 month but what to do after that? i really do not know I'm considering going back and forth into braids until my desired length is achieved which is past my shoulders but my haier keeps breaking if it isnt in braids and i dont know what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank u!

What is your regime when you are not in braids? do you do a good protein plus deep moisturizing treatment? do you use leave-ins? how do you wear your hair when not in braids? how often do you wash it? what products do you use and how do you dry the hair?

Cutting it is the final resort if all else fails. Do you have a reputable stylist you can trust to look at your hair and see what they think?

Give us a bit of info to give more help.

i usually dont do much to it. I use a lot of castor oil and motions moistyurizer. i usually wash with suave and condition with motions protein and cpr.i used to wear it down but i jus tstarted to wear it in a bun. I dont do much to it on a regular basis so i dont understand why it always breaks and its usually at the back. I can see hairs in the sink after combing or brushing.

You say you condition with motions protein and cpr. Thats ALOT of protein! Too much actually. Most protein conditioners dry out the hair and dry hair leads to hair breakage. You should use protein once a month. Even less if you have that much already in your hair.

I would suggest you finding some good deep moisturizing conditioners. You want to put the moisture back into your hair so it gets softer, more pliable and gets its elasiticity back. There's tonnes of conditioner recs here. Do a search on conditioners. Everyone has favourites. I like Mizani Moisturefuse, Motions Moisture Plus, Loreal Unfrizz Smoothing Treatment, Elucence Moisture Balance. Try using a moisturizing conditioner for every wash and leaving it on for a good 30 mins or more. Put a shower cap on and sit under a hooded dryer or wrap a hot towel round the head to get a steam affect and let the conditioner penetrate deeply.

Try hot oil treatments. Plain old extra virgin olive oil is good to start. Heat it and put it on the hair, mid part to ends, pin the ends in and leave it on from 30 mins to overnight. Then do the usual shampoo/conditioning.

Do you sleep with a satin scarf to stop moisture being absorbed out of the hair into your pillow? How often do you wash the hair? I find the effect of conditioners last for approx 4 days max, then you need to wash the hair again to 'top up' that moisture again.

I 100% second what BRH said! I didn't know anything about pre-shampoo hot oil treatments before I came to this board and when I started doing them before every shampoo, my hair really started holding on to moisture. No breakage since January. That's why I really feel like I'm on my way to long hair. Also, whenever my hair would break, the first thing I would do would be to use a protein treatment because it was for stopping breakage. I didn't know too much protein could cause breakage itself!!
