Have you ever noticed how a plant will send off a shoot that just sprouts out there and you are like "dang, that Miracle Gro is WORKEN!!!... (for example, the shoots on a spider plant etc.?) Well, I was checking the length of my hair in the back and generally it is growing in pretty even on the last layer. But just this week out of nowhere, I got a shot of growth that really took me by surpise. About a 1" section wide of hair has just stretched out like a shoot and extends about 3" past the rest and I am like

Yes I do have some layers, but this is one single section that is doing something wierd! No, there is no breakage! This is exciting because if this is just the beginning of a massive growth spurt, I am really blown away. I thought that section would just to continue to edge out evenly like it has always done. Can't wait for "more shoots!" I feel like a hot house plant that got a beautiful bloom on!

Has anyone else experienced this? Okay, then I must be on the right track with my regime thing.

I had absolutely no idea what was going on with my hair. I could not figure it out. I was minutes away from cutting it off, but then I decided to just continue to care for it right along with the rest... afterall, it was healthy, it wasn't an "eye sore", & it hangs right down the middle of my back... actually, I've grown to like it cause it gives the hair a lil "interest"

....by the way, I've never had layers b4...

I invite u to take a look at my pics... there's a section of hair in the back (middle), that's coming directly from my "crown area", about 2" wide & about 2" longer than the rest of the back hair...(I don't count that lil spurt hair in my overall hair measurements though...).

But anyway, after talking with Jade, she explained that she also has this "spurt hair" (as I call it). She said it's called a "tail", and it's basically a section of hair that has outgrown the rest.

So, you're not alone.... u have company girl

One section of my hair used to get really really longer than the rest of the hair so my beautician kept cutting it. Now, ironically, two years later it has remained my spot. I think her cutting it during its growth cycle had a negative effect on it.

I had that experience with the side of my hair (left side)..I went for a touch up once and it was a full 2" longer than the rest of my hair..Of course, the stylist evened it out...:(

Have you had any problems with that side growing since she evened it out?

Well, I am glad I am not the only one. Mine is in the middle of the back part of my head too. The kitchen area. I think that this is the start of something I have been praying for. My hair seems so healthy and I see that the layers are catching up to each other so closely and I think that my hair is saying okay, now that you girls are evening out, we can get on with some length. There is a page in "the long hair site," ( i think that is the one, and it talks about this "evening out process.") I will not be cutting it off or evening it up. I am sure that I will be interfering with something my hair is trying to tell me. "Like leave me alone and let me grow...that is what I do, when you take care of me right."...

When I come across that page on growing out long hair, I will post it here. Bonjour.

My hair does the hri growth spurt thing also. First it starts to itch like the dickens and then magically about one inch of hair appears out of no where. It usually happens in the crown area of my head

Yeah, I have hair like that too. The section in the back, left side is always at least 1" longer than the rest. I used to trim it all the time so the rest could keep up. But, I decided to leave it alone and it's about 1-1.5" longer than the rest. I wish the rest grew like that. I really don't know what is up with that section. I have even tried starving it and paying more attention to the other side and still it grows

Edited to say: I totally agree with you Bettie. I noticed when I trimmed that section my growth everywhere else would slow down considerably. For example, I cut that section back in Sept 2001 and my growth slowed, then again in Feb 2002 and for over 7-8 months my hair didn't grow. Now, that I have left that section alone (besides monitoring splits) my other sections are growing as well...they're shorter than "the section" but they're growing at their own rate. I definitely think there may be a correlation bwt trimming "the section" and slower growth everywhere.

I never thought of it that way...

That will be my new name for it..."queen piece". I can now say I trimmed the queen piece a little bit

On the blue spruce tree there is a central branch that shoots out taller than the rest. This branch ensures that the tree grows into the cone shape. If this leader branch is cut off, the tree grows into an ugly blob wild and no shape.

LOL! we have a Queen B of hair. My piece never grew back. It literally became a spot. It won't grow past 1/2 an itch. I really feel back because it was so long that it looked awkward but better long and awkward than short and stumbly
