I've learned a lot of things from this site that IS THE TRUTH!!!
Growing up though,, i heard a lot of things....Step on a crack, break yo momma's back!! Clip your ends on a full moon, , burn the hair you get out of the comb, It Grows better.I'm sure I've heard more but I just can't remember...Any more???? Let's hear 'em ladies....:lachen:

My mom used to say some weird stuff like, your hair won't grow til you get a touch up :/ or if you don't cut your ends it will stunt ya hair growth.

I heard the straightening the hair often will "train it" and it will reamin straight. AKA...you burn/ ruin the natural curl pattern of your hair
So I would get my hair pressed every two week religiously without washing in between

One of my stylists told me that when I was younger. And I had to get it done every 4-6 weeks.

My mom always said:
1. You must grease your scalp every day to grow your hair
2. Don't wash your hair often because it grows better from a dirty head
3. Plaiting the hair is the best way to grow it

Grease makes your hair grow.
Not washing makes your hair grow.
Dandruff is a sign that your hair is growing.

I like these little gems
- If you don't cut it then it wont grow( plenty of inches lost with that one)
- If you dont relax every four weeks, then your hair will break off where the new growth was
- Dont wash it more than ever month or it will fall out.
- I also had no concept of oils moisterizers ( unless it was pink oil) protien nothing
- also that black hair stopped growing once it got to shoulder length

My mom used to say:

Sin makes your hair fall out! So, I was a good girl thinking my hair would continue to be thick and long....NOT, things changed after I got my first relaxer (bad beautician)...

Wait... maybe she was right!

You have to trim in order for your hair to grow.
My hair would break off before I got to waistlength.

 LOL...I've heard so many, i don't even think I can recall them all...but here are some I still remeber:

-Dirty hair grows faster
-If you don't grease your scalp, your hair will not grow
-if you were born bald...you will grow up to have lots of hair
-if you wash or wet your hair too often, it will fall out
-if you don't perm your new growth every month, your hair will break off
-if you don't comb/brush your hair every morning and night, your hair will get tangled and break off

.....oh there's so much more. I'll post if I remember:lol:

You need a relaxer to stop breakage.

You cannot wash your hair often, which is true, but no one said anything about co-washing (which is my new fav. thing to do).

throw some weave on dat ****!

You don't have the type of hair to go natural.

Comb your hair... always.

Thats stuff is for white folks. ( i knew this was incorrect VERY early on because my stylist didn't use many black products).

wrapping lotion is your friend.

White people/men won't hire, date, or even breath near you if your hair is natural. Ooookay...
As long as it grows out of your scalp and its long, white folks will be fascinated.

I've heard and practiced for a little bit, to comb or brush your hair 100 times every day for it to grow.

That we have to grease our scalps. This never really left me until 2 years ago, when I went a long time without greasing my scalp and my hair grew just fine. But before that when my hair was dry or felt weak, I'd grease my scalp to improve the condition of my hair, though it wasn't a necessity, it always did make my hair feel better, stronger, like it had more elasticity almost instantly.

That you have to go to the hair dresser regularly to grow long hair. And hearing "so and so" has growing hands, or this hairdresser made my hair grow.

Yeah, I heard the same from my aunts to brush your hair 100 strokes every night for long hair. My mother scared me from ever using castor oil because she claimed it turned her sandy brown/red hair dark.

Oh I've heard so many! :lachen:

but here's the top 10:

1. Don't wash your hair more than twice a month, washing breaks it off

2. Trimming the ends makes the hair grow faster

3. If you don't grease your scalp, it will never grow

4. "Kinky black hair" can never grow over shoulder length
5. Relaxing your hair makes it grow faster

6. You have to wait more than 2 weeks to wash your hair after it gets relaxed or it will "revert" (I'm still told this  )

7. Black hair is not made up of the same material that other races have!

8. If your hair was never long as a child, it will NEVER be long.

9. If you're of a mixed race, you won't have kinky hair
10. and the craziest one of all....Kinky hair needs grease, not water! :lachen:

Or that male stylists make your hair grow.

I found myself questioning this week when i decided to co-wash everyday. Surprisingly enough, my hair hasn't reverted...it just grew. Actually... can you co-wash right after a relaxer?

I heard #3 also when I was growing up and it seems to be true. Plaiting/braiding the hair is a protective style.:)

exactly what my mom and every other black woman in my fam told me
