Green foods for growth and overall health

Hi everyone,

Forgive me if someone's already mentioned this, but green foods are a great way to supplement your diet, improve your health and yes, I've noticed a difference with my hair, skin and nails.

These are the two brands I take daily.

I like the powder because I feel like it 'hits' my bloodstream more quickly, but the pills work fine too. The taste takes some getting used to, but I just mix it in with my orange juice or whatever. My coworkers and family are used to me drinking my 'green juice' now, but I don't catch colds in the winter and it helps to relieve cramps. I feel healthier than I ever have.

You'll find that a lot of the discoveries we learn about on the board like spirulina, flax seed and barley grass are ingredients in both of these. Best of all, for us busy ladies, it supplies the equivalent of 4-5 servings of veggies.

You can get them at most health stores.

It's interesting that you posted this. I was wondering how a raw diet would affect my overall health. I don't know if I have the courage to eat raw brocolli etc but I may give it a try.
 
It's been more than a few years now since I've last taken anything similar and boy, my family and I are long over due if not just to keep down the colds. I'm going to try and find the "Perfect food" product and get back onto better health. Thanks for sharing!
 
Greenidlady, I take the perfect foods brand from Garden of Life also! I love this green food supplement (I take the pills). It also has detoxing properties. This is an excellent way for me to get the "greens" into my diet because I am embarassed to say that I am not a big veggie eater. Anyway, thanks for the reviews.
 
Yes, I think a lot of people have discussed the green superfoods before, but we should continue to do so. These are indeed FOODS and the benefits are tremendous.

For anyone looking for something organic, definitely check out Earthwise. They make tremendous products. Others include Green Foods company. There are also a lot of wonderful choices over at Mercola.com.....products and articles.

I am actually crying for some green veggies but this cheap a$$ school are cutting corners anyway they can. What they call a salad is basically the white tough part of an iceberg lettuce and some shavings of carrots, red cabbage, and a couple of cherry tomatoes. I don't have a car, so I'm basically footing around campus.

I drink Barley Green powder mixed with water (takes some getting used to) It's suggested that you drink it at least 2 hours before you eat. I dont drink it everyday, but when I did, it made me feel so energized that I started drinking it before my workouts. This is definitely good stuff!

puritan's pride and I am drinking V8 daily and have seen
a difference in my hair growth.
 
Hi Sweetnic,
I think the raw brocolli would be a wonderful addition to your diet. Brocolli is one of the few cruciferous veggies (there was a post about this last week) that is a cancer fighter and I believe it's also an excellent source of vitamin C.

There are other ways to sneak in a few green nutrients into your diet. I chop up and sprinkle fresh parsley on almost all of my dinner foods. Most people like broccoli...I often add broccoli to my dinner also.

Try drinking green juices.
Naked has a yummy juice called "green machine” It scares some people to drink green juice but it tastes like fresh apples, pears, with kiwi.

Nutritional Benefits
Broccoli is the superhero of the vegetable kingdom with its rich vitamin A content--notice broccoli's dark green color as an indicator of its hearty carotene content. Though a bit on the bitter side, broccoli leaves are completely edible and also contain generous amounts of vitamin A.

With one half-cup of cooked broccoli providing 1083 IU of vitamin A and raw offering 678 IU, this veggie should make a frequent appearance at your dinner table. Folic acid is also abundant with one-half cup cooked registering 39 mcg and raw 31.2 mcg.


Broccoli offers 71.8 mg of calcium for a whole cup of cooked, as much calcium as 4 oz. of milk. That cup of raw contains 42.2 mg.
A cup of broccoli gives you 10% of your daily iron requirement, and the vitamin C content helps the body to absorb the iron.

One cup of cooked broccoli has as much vitamin C as an orange, and one third of a pound has more vitamin C than two and one-half pounds of oranges. A serving of one-half cup cooked broccoli offers 58.2 mg while the raw stores 41 mg. A cup of broccoli actually fulfills your daily vitamin C requirement

If you're a calorie counter, count broccoli in with only 22 calories for one-half cup chopped and boiled and 12 calories for one-half cup raw chopped.

Though this exceptional vegetable is not a powerhouse of protein, it does contain 2 grams for one-half cup boiled, and 1 gram for the same quantity of raw. These same figures apply to fiber as well with 2 grams, for the boiled and 1 gram for the raw broccoli.

Across the nutrition scale, broccoli contains all the nutrients mentioned above in addition to vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.

It is important to note that though the figures listed for raw broccoli seem lower, it is not because raw broccoli is inferior to cooked. Because raw broccoli contains more bulk or volume than the cooked, one must eat more to equal the figures for cooked. Cooking breaks down the volume of broccoli, making it easier to consume larger quantities.

Frozen broccoli contains about 35% more beta carotene than the fresh because the frozen packages consist mainly of the florets. Most of the beta carotene is stored in the florets. But don't jump too quickly. There's plenty of nutrition in those stems, such as extra calcium, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C.

The darker colors of the florets, such as blue green, or purplish green contain more beta carotene and vitamin C than those with lighter greens.

Medicinal Benefits
Though definitive proof is not yet published, the National Cancer Institute suggests that broccoli, along with its cruciferous family members, may be important in the prevention of some types of cancer.

Because of its impressive nutritional profile that includes beta carotene, vitamin C, calcium, fiber, and phytochemicals, specifically indoles and aromatic isothiocynates, broccoli and its kin may be responsible for boosting certain enzymes that help to detoxify the body. These enzymes help to prevent cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure.

Broccoli along with onions, carrots, and cabbage may also help to lower blood cholesterol. At the U.S. Department of Agriculture's regional research center in Philadelphia, two researchers, Dr. Peter Hoagland and Dr. Philip Pfeffer, discovered these vegetables contain a certain pectin fiber called calcium pectate that binds to bile acids, holding more cholesterol in the liver and releasing less into the bloodstream. They found broccoli equally as effective as some cholesterol lowering drugs.

Broccoli's wealth of the trace mineral, chromium, may be effective in preventing adult-onset diabetes in some people. At the Beltsville, Maryland, Human Research Laboratories of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. Richard Anderson, a diabetes expert, found that chromium boosts the ability of insulin to perform better in people with slight glucose intolerance.

greenidlady, how does this stuff really taste? Do you ever really get used to how it tastes or is it a struggle to get it down each time? I'm trying to decide if I want the pills or the powder. I would really much rather have the powder though

It takes some getting used to. It's like you're drinking something that isn't completely dissolved and you can tell that there are veggies in it.

One of the bottles says that it tastes great mixed in water- that's a lie! I tried it like that the first time, and never again. Usually, I'll mix mine with Fuze elixers, Arizona drinks or something where I can taste the fruit with it. Still, I'd take that over the pills any day

.Thanks Greenidlady... I actually decided to go ahead and get the green stuff today. I figured I didn't need another pill and I would absorb more this way. Girl the stuff is no joke. I only did 1 tbs instead of 2 and still had to pretend I was on Fear Factor

I picked up some Perfect Food tablets for me and while there my children asked me to buy "Kyro-green" powder for them (they have forgotten the taste) last Thursday. Thanks again!
 
I've taken Barley Green for the past year and a half. I mix it with water (Plus MSM powder and Beet Root Powder) twice a day. I barely taste it now but in the beginning, this combination was unbearable!

How's everyone doing with their Green foods. I haven't been taking mine. I just started back today, but I need motivation. Any results to report?
 
I have been slacking lately too and have no energy.
I will be getting back on track soon need to diet and exercise especially after the HOLIDAYS.
 
I've been taking mine! I truly think it has been the only thing to keep me from catching cold over the holidays. Everyone at my job was coughing and sneezing. They just laughed at me taking my green juice but I didn't end sick. I saw your post earlier, Armyqt...you can get back into it
