When I first started my HHJ I wanted to keep my hair loose. I like dreads they just "weren't for me" well....they are calling my name and they aren't being to subtle about it either. Sigh.....another one bites the dust. I have loc envy. I'M IN LOVE.

What kind are you looking at with envy, Traditional or Microlocs (Sisterlocks, Braidlocs, etc.)? I started researching Sisterlocks and other microlocking systems, but as I educated myself on locs and their upkeep, I started to fall in love with the look of the more traditional locs.

I can understand. Every now and then I get the itch for locs too. Especially sisterlocks. I have a friend who got them eight years ago and her sisterlocks are beyond phenomenal. She installs them now and always tells me I should let her hook me up sometime. I think about it a lot, but she's so busy it's almost next to impossible to catch up with her. I'll see how I'm feeling in the next few months.

im actually really close to getting sisterlocks. after doin some info i think they'll be the best thing for me. cept for the fact that theyre so small, they'll be hard to take them down if i ever got tired of them. but as soon as i get my financial aid, im goin in for a consult.

OP, why not get a trial run with loc extensions? I think getting locks to grow long and look neat is such an awesome accomplishment and it must be very fulfilling. Still it'd be nice to fake it for a while to make sure it's what you want. Getting a taste of longer locs might actually serve as an inspiration to stick with the journey.

I love locs too but I love the versatility of loose hair to commit to them. So I fake it with braids or twists. :look:

I'm currently really into braidlocs. I just love the way they look and I think it would sooo fit ito my life style. The only down side is that I'm not supposed to have dreads, because I'm in the military. :(

Thank you!! I think this is exactly what I'll do once I get some leave time.

Edit: Nonie, How did you know I'm from Memphis? I love this, as when I go home on leave I can try this out.

I didn't. :giggle: It was just a fluke that the first example I found was a Memphis salon. I didn't even know where it was, just wanted you to see how they look.

Lol. Ah. At first that was a little creepy. I wanted sister locs but I've decided on braidlocs so I can mantain them my self. Now I just have to find some one to put them in for me.

My consult is on thursday. i found a really nice lady here in orl. but one thing thats making me second guess this SL thing is shrinkage. I never took into account how much shrinkage you can get w. SLs. I saw this lady who's hair was APL stretched and when she got her locks it was NL....:ohwell:

I'm debating locs myself!! Traditional, not sister locks, tho sisterlocks do look really cool.
I'm hoping to be able to start them next summer on my hair at whatever length it is by then... We'll see what I decide because I do love my loose hair and all the fun I can have with it.

^^I know what you mean. I love my hair loose too, which is why as much as I admire locs, I can't commit to them...or afford the time the take-down would take. That's why I do braids and twists. A tried to dupe a friend by showing her a pic of my twists and telling her I got locs, and she thought they were sisterlocks :giggle:

I can also fake locs with my twist-out:

Why are you going to get locs when you know you're not allowed to have them in the military?

Won't you have to take them down when they find out?

I wish I could but my hair doesn't even hold cornrows well. It would take tons of upkeep to make them look the way I would like them to always look.

Yes I would have to take them down. However I've already been in for 3 years so my time is almost up as I don't plan on reenlisting. I'm taking this time to nurture my hair and get it to a lengh I'm comfortable with be for starting. As well as reserching and finding someone to do them. The next time I go on leave in Jan I can just get braids which I'm allowed to have. And just never take them out. They will still be braidlooking by the time I go terminal in April. So no worries for me

You know sisterlocs can be maintained by yourself too right?

Can sister locs be taken out (down) without cutting off your hair like traditional locs?

Yes all locs can be taken down even sisterlocs

Yes shrinkage happens for a bit but eventually your hair drops and your see length.

Do not be afraid of shrinkage...it won't bite you

I have that itch as well. I do love the look of the sisterlocs but I already have fine hair. I would do better with traditional locks. I plan on starting them late fall. I tried over the summer, but to much heat and humidity. My hair would not hold.

those pics are of after they first got them done. im talking about after washing and having them in for a week +.

Oh, THAT shrinkage. Sounds like the shrinkage I get on my hair when out or in twists. I actually like it. I am working on using products on my hair and I can't imagine having product laden hair touching my clothes. *shudder*

Yes, I know. But you are supposed to wait 6 months after getting them and then pay to take the class. Plus my pockets are already light. I can't afford the 500$ install fee or the once a month 25$ an hour upkeep fee untill then. But, don't get me wrong those babies are drool worthy. But I only have enough money to window shop.

Oh I see what you mean sis :yep:. FYI You can learn how to retighten yourself without taking the class on dewdrops youtube I believe on nappturality many SLocers are DIYour selfers. Some SL techs are much cheeper then 500.00-the longer your hair is sometimes the more it cost. I get my hair retightened every 2.5 months-not once a month, but yeah I get your point. Braidlocs are beautiful too :yep:

Very pretty, Netta! Do tell the benefits :poke:

lol. i was gonna post the same thing. w. that same exactly smiley, lol. i wanna hear too

Now about those benefits :yep:

I do nothing to my hair except shampoo once a week and maybe add some oil
loced hair is EASY to grow...you do nothing. N.O.T.H.I.N.G AND IT STILL GROWS no rocket science...:brainy:
There is NO DETANGLING...NONE.NONE.NONE
I don't own a comb...
no deciding what protective style to wear (my hair is already in a protective style )
I can wear my hair DOWN without having to worry about breakage
Afterwhile I will be able to SEE my natural length...w/o stretching :crystalba
Split ends mean NOTHING to the locer
I literally get up and go...I go I tell ya
I can still curl/roller set/updo/bantu/hot curl/dye/and flat iron (and whatever else loose hair can do)
Sisterlocs are far from boring and if all else fails...all locs can be taken down like anything else even after YEARS of being loced

whew thanks I was waiting to say that
