I've always worn my hair up. Before it was ponytails, now always buns. While my hair is getting longer, I have more breakage than ever. I know some of this is due to neglect. Since going back to relaxers, I haven't taken great care of my hair. It is very dull and usually dry now. But I also think wearing my hair up all the time may not be helping. My sides and edges also seem to grow slow and never get as long as the rest of my hair. I don't like wearing my hair out/loose but are there any other options?

Do you only do one kind of bun? There are a million different buns. Are you open to wigs and weaves? I can't think of any other way to switch up styles while not wearing your own hair down.

Do you have a regimen? Before you worry about styling, you want to pinpoint the cause of your breakage and dryness.

I agree with NN. Your hair isn't dry because you wear it up! Find the reason for the dryness and amend your regime accordingly. Add moisture, protein, condition... Good luck
