Going without moisturizes?

Hello. I currently use NTM and ORS Lotion moisturizes, but I don't like how they make my hair look. I also think that my hair seems to shed more when I use them.

I was wondering if it's possible to maintain healthy hair while relying just on conditioners for moisurizing? (I co wash every two days.) I really like how my hair comes out after just being washed, and when I put additional products on it it weighs it down and prevents it from moving.

I love the feel of my hair blowing in the wind , so I would love any recommendations. =)

I can do this if I shampoo and condition 2 times a week and really condition well. If I only have time to shampoo my hair once a week, it doesn't work adn my hair starts to get dry. But even still I have only a few light moisturizers that I will use or only to soften new growth.

My hair is at its best when I cowash and use a leave in conditioner. That's it. I had to find the right conditioners for my hair, though. It doesn't work with just any products, unfortunately. In general, though, I have found that less is better. When I put moisturizers and etc. in my hair, it almost always takes on a feel I don't like. Eventually my hair just feels kind of gross. So I try to control myself and use very little. :)

ETA: I cowash every day.

Washing and conditioning every 2 days might be enough moisture and protein for your hair. Its hard for anyone to say. If I had the energy to wash my hair every 2 weeks, i'd probably use just a dab of leave-in and wouldn't use daily moisturizers. But maybe u are using waaaay too much product. Try using barely a dime sized dab for each quarter section concentrating on the ends of your hair, as a leave-in before you dry. Or try something that is lighter than what u are using...

I cowash once a week, wear my hair in twists (whipped pudding and ORS gel) during the week, and moisturize MAYBE once a week with some Oyin HoneyHemp Conditioner - and I only do that if I rinse my hair out more than twice.
I'm assuming that you are wearing your hair out, so it'll lose moisture faster - but if you are cowashing every two days....you should be aiight.

Try it for a week or two and see what you think...

Redhotlala, (the young lady with the booty length hair) says she doesn't use moisturizers, and she washes once every 2-3 weeks... this regime is obviously working for her, so it may work for you.

I have yet to find a moisturizer that I like. They are too wet for my hair whether I use a lot or a little??? I've been using oils and so far I'm pleased with the results. I haven't figured out the whole moisturize (wet) then oil (seal) process so that's what I'm working with so far. I oil 1-2 times daily (not grease) and wash once a week.

Im glad that you started this thread because for the past couple of days I have just been using jojoba oil. I know that many say that jojoba oil doesnt really moisturize, but I really like it. And I agree with Cichelle-sometimes moisturizers make my hair feel gross. I dunno...

She does use oils though. May you shoudl try some oils instead. Some people have better luck with oils alone.

I am one of them. Kemi Oyl works well for me to maintain between shampoo and conditions.

CS,
I felt EXACTLY the same as you!

I am natural and I have been wearing my fro out daily since my BC back in August.
Thst's when I began experimenting to determine what to put in it to keep it moisturized.

I tried creamy moisturizers: UBH, ORS, NTM, B&B, Mango Butter.
Then I tried oils: Kemi, castor, Jamaican m&l, cactus, carrot, and evoo.
Then I tried mixing regular conditioners with the oils in bottles of water, creating my own "spritzes".

Turns out my hair prefers not to have oils in it, either directly or indirectly.
The only exception is an itsy-bitsy amt of castor oil, which leaves it soft. Kemi Oyl is "aight", but only on freshely shampoo'd/conditioned hair.

But really, anything mentioned above, even Sta-Sof-Fro gel, causes my hair to ball up in knots and rebel after two or three days! Especially if I reapply through out the day.

So, I began to do less, in terms of putting stuff in it and my hair is 100% better!

I shampoo and deep condition every Thurday, and do my Co-wash on either Sun or Mon.

The other days I just rinse, apply a dime sized amt of MNT leave-in condish, pick it out, and my hair is soft and fluffy all day!

I spritz with just plain water when I want to give it a "boost" and pick it out a bit.
So really, for my 4b hair, less is best!

Also, if I don't want to go out with a wet head in the morning, I spritz with plain water the night before, apply my plastic bag, and cover with my satin bonnet.
In the morning, it's soft as cotton.
I just pick it out and go.......

Moisturizers do not work for me... I was recently using ALLWAYS Natural Leave-in Oil Moisturizer. It worked for a minute--I thought... Moisturizers just make my hair sticky and dirty which leads to breakage and shedding. Itfanything--I may apply a tiny bit of Aveda Humectant to my ends. But my hair doesn't seem to like any moisture and/or oil on a daily basis. So I basically deep condition eveytime I shampoo or co wash every day to every other day.

I tried to use Jojoba oil once, and it dried my hair out sooo badly. At the time had no idea what I was doing though, so that may've been the problem.

I'm happy to hear that a lot of you don't moisturize daily. I'm going to try doing CO washes every two days. I looove the way my hair turns out after one. It's poofy, and very soft. I don't have problems with it getting dry again yet, which is a godsend for me because a year or so ago I had veeery many problems with dry hair.

I'm hoping that this will help reduce breakage as well.

To those who use oils, is there any special way to apply them?

I don't moisturize my hair in between my weekly washes. I only put Constant Care for Ends on my ends at night and that's it. My hair is fine and feels moisturized. I guess I get everything sealed in at wash time.
