I wonder what other naturals are doing. I plan on were press n' curl and flat ironing hair styles.

Does anyone else do this? What are your experiences?

Thank you for your time. Write back!

I follow a no heat regimen so this doesn't work for me. I'm totally natural but some others have ways of getting their roots straight without heat.
What about the ponytail method? Or if you wear it out you can wray your hair at night and wear a bun during the day.

I haven't flat ironed my hair since my BC, but I did it a few times while transitioning.

My advice - use lots and lots of heat protectant. I have a maxiglide, and I think the 'teeth' on it is a bonus on getting natural hair straight.

Plenty, I use to have your mindset before I came to the napputural side. I don't use heat hardly ever on my hair. Once you become natural, you just learn that somethings are hair abusive. I really caution you to not go natural if you want to wear your hair straight all the time.

I am natural and have worn my hair straight the entire time, up until now (I'm on the hide your hair until Dec challenge). I have not had any problems with wearing my hair straight, but everyone's hair is different.

Is your hair naturally straight? If not, do you press it often?

My experience: When I finally decided to wear mostly straight styles, when i weighed the heat, work and manipulation factors of natural hair vs. the one-time chemical process with roller sets, I made the decision to go back to the relaxer after about 2-3 years natural. I am personally relieved. So do what works best for your lifestyle...hhg!

Im with country gal. Your do more damage constantly straightening natural hair with heat that you would with relaxed hair. Most peopel here wash thier hair once or twice a week and to think that you;d be pressing and flat ironing your hair every week... :nono: Im with country gal.

I'm gonna say bad idea. I used to straighten every 2 weeks when I first went natural, you might not notice at first but after awhile damage is getting done no matter how much protectant you use. I look at my curls now after I BC'ed and what they used to be and they're are completely different and it was all from progressive heat damage

I agree with this

I agree with this as well. If I wanted to wear straight hair all the time I definitely would have relaxed again by now. Maybe that's cause when I flat iron it takes me 2hrs or so...but I thought you work out a lot? I don't know how well that is going to work...especially with the sweat factor, your gonna need to rinse/wash your hair at least once a week or more if you sweat a lot (like I do)

As a natural I like the fact that I can work out and just take a shower and rinse after each workout and not worry about anything but when I flat iron, I will not step foot in a gym to preserve the press.

I rarely straighten, maybe 2x per year 3x at the most. If I want a straight look I'll put on 1 of my 50-11 straight wigs. Straight hair w/ no damage, gotta love it :D

I think it depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you have any desire to wear two-strands or an afro on a regular basis, straightening may not be the best idea. For those who care to wear their hair straight and flat iron 1x/ week the loss of curl pattern is not a really big deal...

I straighten often, and while my curl pattern is a bit looser, it is also much easier to manage. Although my edges which are 4B are pretty much straight.

The last time I had a relaxer was about 15 years ago and I have been pressing every since. And to be honest with you my hair has been about the same lenght all this time. I have seen growth spurts here and there and guess when? When I left the heat alone and just wore braids or something like that. i am in the process of researching what relaxer I want to put in my hair because I would rather just roller set and be done with it. I think I am going to get it relaxed about 80% of the way so that I can have some texture left in it. I just honestly think the pressing thing is a bad idea.

For me, it would be pointless to keep my natural hair heat straightened. It would never hold up to a workout or Georgia's humidity. Plus, I prefer my natural texture to a straight one.

I'm natural and prior to discovering LHCF in 2003, I wore my hair straight all of the time. My hair stayed right at shoulder length or just a little past. The process of straightening frequently is just too abusive to the hair. Now that I have knowledge of so many no-heat styles, I only press my hair 3 or 4 times a year. And, I have begun to retain much more length in the process.

When I first started transitioning, I had someone press the front of my hair so my weave would look smoother. A year later, I am still dealing with the damage. My hair in the front frizzes up and doesn't coil like the rest of my hair. I really regret it because the lady hard pressed my hair and it doesn't have a natural curl anymore just waves up. :(

I think it's a personal preference. If you want to be natural and wear your hair straight - why not? It can give you the flexibility of curly hair sometimes and straight hair sometimes. Sometimes getting a relaxer can be a hassle and you still have to worry if someone will screw up your hair. I know people IRL who have natural hair but wear it straight all the time and it's just as healthy as anyone else's. I've also come across people on various boards who wear their hair straight all the time, too. Really, I just think it's a personal preference.
