I'm thinking of getting a weave as a protecive style in a few weeks, but I've never gotten a weave before and I need any advice and I have a few questions.
My hair is bra strap length and my stylist recommended that if I'm going to get a weave that I get "deep wave" because otherwise anything straighter will show the thick tracks, I was also considering something slightly less curly. She also recommended I get a relaxer first (not necessarily the same day) so that the tracks will be as flat as possible. I was hoping that a blowdry would be sufficient.
Has anyone with my length hair gotten it weaved? Was it very thick and is deep wave hair very curly, is it easy to wash and style? I'm pretty good when it comes to dealing with my hair, but I've never had a weave before so I'm a total newbie. Any input is really appreciated. Thanks ladies!

I think that if she is skilled enough you don't need to get a relaxer close to weaving time. I always wait at least 6 weeks and then weave it up. Basically she has to make more braids with a smaller width. If the hair is deep wave and not wet and wavy it should be extremely easy to handle just mist to freshen it up. When I had wet n wavy I had to work to maintain the curl ie mousse, gel etc. At the time I wasn't at bra strap but maybe 2 inches away from it. Just make sure she is careful with your own hair as she is braiding it up.

If your hair is as thick as she says it is..then I would suggest her putting track to every other braid..

Unless ur wearing some of ur hair out then I would suggest a perm..but if ur hair is completely covered..I really dont see the point..

I wore weaves while transistioning and never had a problem.

Use Sebastian Wet..thats ur best friend with curly hair..

Cutebajangirl, thanks so much for mentioning your experience with wet and wavy hair, I was considering that because someone said that deep wave knots up when washed. The only hair that seems to match with the look I'm going for is spanish wavy, I'm really hoping that the deep wave isn't very puffy, I don't want to look like diana ross.

Zoe, I will definately buy a bottle of Sebastian's wet. Wouldn't some of my hair have to left out in order for there to be a natural looking part? I wonder how I'm going to get my hair too blend with the deep wave texture, but I figure it's better than having tracks showing.

Anything I should look for when she's braiding or putting in the weave to make sure she doesn't jack up my hair

, I have no idea what the dos and don'ts are.

Thanks!

There are people who can braid all your hair in and not have tracks showing. When I had a deep wave weave in, I had a little bit of hair left out where my part was. I just smoothed it out with gel and it blended fine. My hair wasn't relaxed either, but I would advise you to not leave too much out, just enough to cover the tracks.I have to admit, I used quite a bit of gel so I was sure it wouldn't fly up, then I tied it down with a headtie while it dried. I took care of my weave by brushing it wet in the shower with conditioner daily, and braiding it at night. I also used elasta qp feels like silk on the weave hair, it really helps detangle and smooth out. HTH

Ebony, thank you very much for the links, they are very helpful! I used the search function and non of those threads came up. Now all I have to do is decide between spanish wavy and deep wave.

The stylist was a little concerned when I showed her my current length, has anyone else with shoulder length or longer hair gotten it weaved? How did it come out?

Bettydavis, how was the curl factor with the deep wave hair, is it very curly/big and were the curls easy to maintian or did they frizz easily? I've seen pictures of the hair but only in bags, not actually weaved onto someone's hair. I'm also considering spanish wavy, I heard that deep wave tangles easily.

To be honest, I can't remember exactly what the name was, but they waves were fairly big, and on me, it wasn't a big curly look, it hung pretty flat but had some volume. It looked nice to me. I thought it was deep wave...but anyways, the smaller the waves/curls are, the more it will tangles, generally. I've also had the kind of braids that are just done to the ends of my hair and left out with really curly hair, and I was still able to prevent knotting by daily brushing and using that feels like silk. As long as you maintain it, it will be okay. But if you try to go a day without combing it, it will get matted, esp if it's been in for a while. Since I've worn extensions for a long time, it's like second nature to me, conditioner will really help.Make sure you brush it from the roots of the tracks, cause that part can get really tangled if you ignore it. Also, just to clarify, I'm talking about human hair here.

Okay here's a pic of the size of wave I'm talking about:

Bettydavis,
I know the braids you're talking about where they are braid and then left loose, a friend of mine had those and they were fantastic, but my hairdresser said I couldn't get them because my hair was too long since the ends would be open, I would have had to get them way too long

Thanks for the tips and yes I was talking about human hair.

my hair & my sister's have been past shoulder length at the time of all the weaves we've gotten. I personally love the french refined as I stated in the posts, but haven't tried the spanish-wavy. my sister has had bone straight & french refined. she has 4b thick hair & likes the french refined better. also, one thing that helps with hiding bumps is to get what's called an extra thin weft. we've been getting those since our first weave back in '97. the hair is more tangle free with certain products whether getting the spanish wavy or french refined. my sister likes more moisturizing products on her weaves that contain oil while i like moisturizing mousse & gel. sebastian wet is a must have for my weaves. the curl that it keeps or the frizziness really depends on what you use on the weave hair. i know exactly what to use when i want more curls, or a frizzier look, more of a full 4a look or even a straight look which you can do with the french refined hair that I purchase.
