Fresh manicures and breakage

A couple of weeks ago I started noticing very long stands of broken hair when I would wash or condition. I went back and read Sistalick’s post about breakage, I checked to make sure my protein/moisture balance was good and it seemed to be. I tried all the tips I could remember to put a stop to breakage, nothing seemed to be working. I could not figure out why my hair was breaking and more alarming, why it was be breaking so far up the shaft. Then I saw it; a long strand of broken hair caught in one of the chips of my nail polish.

I always wear clear polish so that it doesn't look crazy if/when it chips but I usually don't let it stay on long enough to get to that point. Well this summer I have been a bit lazy and have not been maintaining my manicures. Apparently my chipped nail polish was acting like a pair of dull scissors and was cutting strands of hair from my head. I immediately gave myself a manicure and problem solved.

I am always amazed at the little things that can sabotage your hair health and growth. It just goes to show that while having the right products and the right regimen is certainly important, the way that you handle you hair (from using the right comb and brush to making sure your nails are smooth) is, atleast, equally important.

I hope this is helpful to someone:)

Great post! I'll keep that in mind, because I paint my nails every now and then, and get lazy about removing the polish.

One thing I also try to keep in mind is to keep my nails filed, to make sure they're not chipping on the sides, so that my hair doesn't get caught in my chipped nails.

I do the same. My hair gets caught in unfiled nails a lot. :(

Same thing here. I have to keep my nails cut low because they will definitely snag. And, those who wear them, rings can cause a real problem to. I guess that's another reason why low manipulation works. Glad you found the culprit!

Yes, I noticed that the white tips of the french manicure can catch on the hair. Girl, I would rather have nice hair than long, polished nails.

It’s a trip how the little things matter. I read another thread where a woman started wearing plastic gloves to wash her hair to protect a scare on her hand and discovered that she had less shedding and breakage. She was thinking about using gloves to wash from now on. I thought it was extreme, but now I am reconsidering:look:

This is so true. Before wash day, I file my nails down to prevent snags. My nails grow way too fast!! I wish the hair could do the same  BTW Testimony777 you hair is pretty in your avatar :)

Testimony777 I know exactly what you mean. I wear an acrylic overlay on my nails and if it chips or lifts from my nail bed I have to be very careful with my hair. It will snag everytime!

I have had the same experience. So what I do is use the latex gloves when washing hair because I sometimes cant even see a nail snag and why take them chance.:)

I have the oposite problem: when I finger comb my hair in the shower, my hair cut my nails (with or without polish) and I don't know what to do because I love my hair and my nails:perplexed......I'll use latex gloves , thanks chiprecious!
