To the henna users that put henna on their hair every week or so, how does it affect the color, does it make it more red everytime you use it? What is the average time you leave it on if you use it every week? Does it really make that much difference if you use it once a month versus once a week?

I just did my first Henna treatment tonight, I did a conditioner treatment. I mixed the henna with yogurt water and alma oil. I put it in my hair and sat under the heating cap for about 45 minutes. My hair strands look thicker, but my hair feels kind of hard and it was really hard to detangle. I used conditioner afterwards but the next time I henna I will deep condition longer afterwards.

Anyother ideas on how to detangle/soften my hair after henna would be greatly appreciated...sorry not trying to hijack the thread but this should be helpful for everyone:look:

You right it should help others, I did my first henna on Saturday night, I actually shampooed the night before, when I rinsed it out I did a condition wash, I used CPR conditioner afterward and sat under the dryer, my hair was not hard, my hair type is 3b/c it was very easy to comb through

I henna 2x per week. My hair is died black, so it takes several applications before I notice red, or sometimes my newgrowth will be red and the rest black. My hair is medium fine, so 2x per week gives me great thickness and strength. I now leave mine on for 30-45 minutes, but mostly 30 min. (that's whats suggested for conditioning purposes; longer times are for deeper coloring.

For detangling: I usually use Cream of Nature POO after I henna, which is great at this & then DC with heat for 20 minutes.

A lot of ladies are having success (soft, moisturized hair) by mixing their henna/cassia w/ conditioner (moisturizing). That is also how I do mine and I have soft hair after. (I also DC w/ a moisturizing conditioner w/ heat afterwards)

I henna every week and the color gets richer and deeper. Once I let the henna sit overnight and the dye is released, I add emu, carrot, and olive oil to the mix. It rinses out very well and my hair has never felt dry. I added conditioner once and it didn't moisturize my hair as well as the oils.

I think I will try using it once a week for about a month to get the conditioning benefits, I don't want it to make my hair too red. I have some breakage problems right now.

Wow you ladies are great, I am going to try all of your tips, I may replace the yogurt with conditioner next time. I may also look into purchasing some Cassia.

When my Indigo gets here I will be going Jet Black!!!:D :D :D

I've got four packs of henna sitting in the bathroom now, but I'm SO scared to go there. My hair is dark sandy and I really worry it will pick up too much red... tho I kinda wonder if it'll turn that red, or just kinda show some highlights. I think my real fear is turning a deep burgundy--that would be so not cool.

Maybe you should leave it on for a short period of time, or do the harvest test.

Thanks for this suggestion; I'd forgotten about the harvest test. As I type, half a little ball of my harvested hair, rescued from the trash, is now coated with henna paste, sitting in a little jar. I'll give it a few hours, rinse and see how it looks next to the untested half. I went to hennaforhair.com and remembered I can also test mixes to change the color. So my samples won't go to waste after all!

Excited! Thanks again! :)

Did you let the dye release before you did the test? That will help you know what color it will turn your hair. What brand did you buy?

D'oh. See? I don't know what the sam hill I'm doing. I mixed it up, put the hair right in and let it sit for 3 hours. Washed it out and the hair is still my usual auburny brown. I was wondering why I didn't see any color. I need to let it release! But now I'm wondering if I just use it without letting it release, can I avoid the color change?

I bought my henna from indian-herb-exporters.com; it was recommended by the ladies on the board.

I'm new to this henna stuff, so I'm not in any postion to give advice; but I thought I read in one of the post that if you don't release it you can still get the conditioning benefits. You might want to read some of the henna posts.

The yogurt didn't agree with my hair at all. I tried it twice with yogurt and won't be adding it again.

I have figured out that once a month is good for me as far as conditioning goes. My hair stays conditioned, silky, and glossy doing a henna every 4 weeks. My hair is growing really fast now though, so I could do it more often to touch up the roots of the straggling grays, but I don't. I think my hair is fully saturated with color, if that is even possible. My color doesn't change anymore. Henna made my hair a really dark, dark brown, almost black with cranberry red highlights. My hair had always been a yucky, dusty brown and I had leftover gold streaks. So when people ask about what color they will get, I keep my mouth shut, cause I am amazed at the color I got......totally unexpected cause I don't use indigo or amla, but thankfully I love it. I doubt there is anyway you can know what your color will be other than doing a strand test on the same hair three times and letting it oxidize for 3 days each time. My hair progressively got darker each time during the first four times I hennaed...then I think I got to saturation point.

The more people that post about their experiences, the more I realize that henna is a very individual, personal thing. But if you stick with it and get through the initial stages, the end result is always fabulous!;)

That's very interesting...what do you mix yours with, I don't want my hair to be too red or too dark, I did it once and it gave me a little tint, I might try again in a week or so I'm thinking about ordering some amla oil, don't know which one is better regular or lite

I brew some herb tea (raspberry, currant, or strawberry vanilla) and let it steep for an hour and mix that with my henna. Then I add rosemary, clary sage, lavender, and tangerine essential oils, about 15-20 drops each. The rosemary, sage, and lavendar are good terps so I don't have to use anything harsh or acidy. Then I let the color release. Right before I apply to my hair I add EVOO. Then I pour it in an applicator bottle. No mess! I've got it down to a science now!;)

Do you ever use yogurt? I used it because I read it makes it smoother, which it was, but I don't know how it would have been if I didn't use it since I've only tried it once. Your mix sounds good, one thing about henna you can come up with so many different mixes.

Good thread, I'm reading learning too about the wonders of henna. :bookworm:

I've learned from the main henna thread (and LHC) that the yogurt does make the henna smoother for application but for our hair, it's protein on top of protein which can make the hair hard and difficult to detangle. Henna already has protein so it sounds like it's best to use it like Lavendar did or add a good conditioner.

That's interesting your hair became dark brown with cranberry red highlights - without amla and indigo. How beautiful!

Maybe I will try conditioner instead of yogurt to see if I notice a difference.
Anyone one of anything else beside yogurt and conditioner that makes it smooth?
