What do you change about your hair routine when you have more new growth? Do you use specific products? Any protectiv styles you suggest?

I have a lot of new growth and it tangles so it's difficult for me to detangle and I don't want any extra breakage
Do you know good detangling products for new growth? Because my regular products don't always work on my new growth
And my hairtype is 4A
TIA

I apply wild growth oil to my scalp every other day, it makes my new growth super soft. I wash once weekly - apply a warmed oil mixture to scalp (combat winter dryness) then i apply deep conditioner (eg. the avocado one that popular on here) to MY DRY HAIR. put on plastic cap and go under the dryer for 20mins. rinse out and condition with elucence moist. bal. then rinse and roller set. and walla! !

i had 4 months worth of new growth and tried nexxus y conditioner and i couldnt beleiveeeee the amount of slip i got.i was so shocked.i was just in the shower and rinsed out the conditioner and took a comb and it fell through the new growth, seriouslyyyyy,it's like the new growth just parted with the comb.i was honestly shocked.nothing has worked that great for me so far other than the nexxus when it comes to slip.wildgrowth is also very good at managing new growth and i hear alot of good things about healthy hair butter.i'm also on the stretching out challenge, trying to relax twice a year and i honestly think i can do it with nexxus y conditioner.

I'm presently 5 wks post relaxer. Hair type 3c/4a? Forewarning: I'm a product junkie (PJ).

Last time when I went about 16 wks I used to shampoo (1x a week, condition wash midweek) and deep condition (detangled in the shower as condition was being rinsed out), followed by a leave-in, oil and sometimes I ended with a setting lotion (new growth regimen products to follow). After that I would comb it into a ponytail (no holder), twist and make a coil bun secured with Good Hair Day pins (GHD), tied hair down with a scarf and air dry. Some times when I used the setting lotion I would go under the hair dryer for about 20 mins then scarf it and continue with air drying.

Shampoos: Make sure you find a shampoo that isn't striping all of your natural oil from your hair. If all you have are harsh shampoos add oil to it and/or dilute the shampoo to make it gentler. Hot oil treatment before shampoo will help to decrease the harshness of the shampoo on your hair (more for shampoo to clean) as well as other benefits. You can also just shampoo your scalp and hairs 2-4 inches from scalp after putting conditioner on the rest of the length. Allow the rest of the hair to be cleaned by the run off as you rinse. Some conditioners can aid in the cleaning process a little as well (with ingredients like grapefruit extract, other citrus, etc.).

Here are some of the shampoos that I was using: Keracare Hydrating, Jason Natural Sea Kelp , Cream of Nature, Motions, and Nexxus Therappe. Clarified with Ion and Aubrey Organic swimmer shampoos (others are better).

Conditioners: Though I didn't do this some ladies follow up their deep conditioner with a conditioner rinse as well with good results. Here are some of the conditioners I used last time: LUST, Aubrey Organic Jojoba and Aloe, Mizani Moisturefuse (old formulation d/c), Phytospecfic Intense Nutrition Mask,LeKair Cholesterol Plus Aloe, Motions Moisture Plus

Oil: To help soften my new growth and give it that Whoa! feel after it dries I use WGO.

Detangler Comb: I normally detangled after I let the water start rinsing the conditioner off my hair a little first. Some ladies are more successful by presectioning their hair and braiding it before they start the hair washing process. They then do one section at a time during each process. Combs I use to detangle: #1 choice, Jilbere shower Comb (Sally's) also used #2 Conair shower comb (Target, Walmart, etc.) and #3 on dried hair that has been well moisturized, I have used a large antibacterial comb after filing down the sharp parts first (Sally's).

These are the products and the things I did prior to getting my hair relaxed 10/29/03 to deal with the new growth. During that time I was experimenting with hair steamers that might of helped as well. The purpose of the steamer was to get the conditioner and moisture deeper into the shaft.

This time around I plan to experiment some more using different products, as needed (PJ

), as well as different techniques....ie. ACV, Carol's Daughter's products, Elucence shampoos and conditioners, C/W/C, etc.

HTH!

Edited to add: Keeping the hair moisturized is key.

One thing that helps me, is dampening the new growth and applying some grease. For me this softens the new growth and I have an easier time when combing thru.

I use a very moisturizing conditioner, straightening balm, leave-ins and plenty of oil and wear my hair in braids or a bun very often.

i keep the same routine. i just blow out my roots when i shampoo with a comb attachment and i don't EVER comb through my roots once they turn "foresty"

those of you with 4a/b hair know what i'm talking about

When I was natural I would s/con and plait my hair and wear a wig, sometimes I would wear braids, sometimes I would wear a straw set, cornrow my hair in front and wear a hairpiece in the back, you have many options, you could even press your hair. Also, try that lime and coconut milk natural hair straightener. One tip I got here was not to comb the newgrowth and I will definitely be trying that tip and will let you know how it goes.

The only time I ever try to detangle/comb my hair is under the shower stream. When your 20 weeks plus I don’t think that it’s smart to even try to attempt to comb it dry. You will definitely lose hair this way.

I shampoo with detangling shampoo’s such as Keracare detangling shampoo or CON. Deep condition under the dryer for 20-30 minutes with Elucence or Keracare. Rinse under the stream of water using a wide bone comb I got from hairsense.com. Once I add my leave in’s and oils I either rollerset it or pull it back in a loose bun. When in a bun I tie it down with a scarf so it stays flat and sit under the dryer for 20 minutes. I don’t touch it again until the next wash. The only thing I do is spray it with a leave in mixture, add oil and smooth it back into a bun.

Garnier Fructis and Root Health use together soften my newgrowth to make it easier to deal with I am at 11 weeks post relaxer.
