I've been experimenting with different powders lately and I'm trying to get a regimen together. I've been using henna for a couple years now, and have used aritha, amla and shikakai a couple times. My question is, if I don't use cones, can the shikakai be used in place of shampoo or do I still need a shampoo to clarify? Does the shikakai get rid of build-up?

Shikakai is a natural shampoo. If it's the only shampoo you use, it should be sufficient to get your hair clean. Aritha is a bit stronger than shikakai so you could experiment with blending the two if you want extra cleansing.

I use cones and I still use Shikakai. You can use the Shikakai as you would a regular shampoo and use the Aritha like you would a clarifying shampoo. I also have a Shikakai bar for the days I feel a little lazy. Just make sure you are using the Amla with Shikakai to keep your hair from drying out.
