Did any of you who did the long transition do so with the help of a stylist? I am thinking that when I move back home (5 months) to have mine help me. She has already offered to help me by doing Deep CO's once a month and a press when I need it. Has anyone else done this?

I haven't been to a "stylist" since Jan 04?, which was just before I began my transition & discovered LHCF. I've only use heat once in the past 2 years; that was in about March or April 04- I blow dried to get some cornrows, not a necessary thing at all. Be careful using heat.

No, I can't even remember the last time I've been in a salon to get my hair done, I'm even considering doing my hair myself for my wedding :ohwell:

With the exception of getting extension braids, I haven't been to a hairstylist in years. I've done all deep conditionings, hair trims, and styling on my own and will continue to do so.

You shouldn't need a stylist to help with your transition, you should just try some low maintenance styles.

When I go home for breaks my stylist deeo conditions, flat irons, and trims my hair. I only see her once every three months though. After I chop I don't intend on goign to a stylist unless I need something special like color or a trim.

If you have a trusted stylist who sincerely wants to help you transition I think that is a great idea. The problem is that many stylists don't understand transitioning and bug the heck out of the transitioner about getting a relaxer. So, if you guys are on the same page, I bet she could be very helpful and make your transition less stressful. Good luck.

Absolutely not! I know my stylist well, and she would not be down with it. It's cool though, because this board is helping me learn to love and care for my hair.

all the times I've transitioned, i've done it myself. I trim my ends myself...the only time i visit a stylist is when i want a blow out. But even now I have learned to get the straight look without the dominicans. It doesn't last as long, but I get it.

Hey mscounselor, my transition was about 9 months, and for the first 6 months I went for a wash, condition, and (Dominican) blow-out about every two weeks. My natural hair was not affected. The only down side was the humidity here in Miami: it frizzed and then curled back up after a few days.

Nope, no stylist... why??? just so that they can take ur money!!! IMHO, u don't need a stylist during ur transition (unless maybe u just wanna pamper urself). I totally agree with Cincy... do low maintence styles... i wore buns, braid with my own hair etc which worked for me (for 18 mths).

OT but you really need to stop teasing me w/ that pretty hair  Not a speck of frizz anywhere I can't stand you :whip: just playing you know you my girl lol

I agree with everyone who said that they'll just try to put a relaxer in, but I have spoken to the stylist and she is for whatever I want. My main problem was at 6 months with all the breakage. If I had her to do a deep treatment and perhaps a blow out, I would be almost 9 months post. The one here just suggested a relaxer. I need the professional support and training so once I get a hang of doing things myself I'll still have a back up.

I understand the need to learn how to do your hair yourself. I can do mine to an extent. I will say that I absolutely cant wear buns though. After and hour of a loose bun, I had a headache.

Thanks for all your replies! ;)

I understand!! I live in Central Florida and its bad here too.

I only go for an occassional cut... to gradually get rid of relaxed ends :) . Other than that I do it myself. I think you can too.

Nope, just advice from the beautiful ladies here and on nappturality! Look in some fotki albums :)

I went to a stylist only because I wanted my hair cut in layers and because I wanted it dyed when I was transitioning. Other than that I wouldn't way that my stylist was neccesary to help me. I got all of the info and help that I needed from another hair board. I only needed the stylist for 2 specific things, other than that I had to suffer through his naggings about why I should get a texturizer and queries about why I was going natural in the first place. Still, it's up to you. ;)

I am transitioning but i wouldn't go to a hair salon b/c i feel like what others said, they will bug you about getting a relaxer.
