Them tips from the board. I was having a conversation with some colleagues regarding another's co-worker's hair. They were complaining that it looked a hot mess of course never telling the poor soul in person what they think. They were saying you need to comb your hair every day. I was like no you don't. Your hair doesn't have to be comb especially natural hair. I usually just use my fingers. I told them I never comb my hair unless it is wash day. Then I am using a denman brush. They were looking at me like I was crazy.

I notice when I tell folks that I don't like going without a week of washing my hair that think I am crazy.

When I first discovered conditioner washing I was eager to tell everyone and was met with great skepticism. I also get the same reaction whenever I mention any type of holistic health thing. So I try to keep my mouth shut. When I can't keep it shut, I try remember that even if a person's initial reaction is bad, one day what I said might click and make sense for them.

Me too CG. It really bothers my co-worker that I don't comb my hair between washings. Also, I my mom seems upset when i talk about going natural like why would anyone want to do that:lol: I try not to tell my tips b/c of people's reactions but I would like to help:ohwell:

I don't say anything to anyone anymore, it's just ridiculous the looks and reactions you get.People look @ you like you have 2 heads
They ask I jsut say my hair is natural and I'm on the organic healthy tip and they leave it @ that.

I grew up being told by reasonably sane black people that 'hair grows better when dirty', so I'm not surprised by the reaction you get.

Yeah I can understand it from both sides because one of my friends told me about this web site and her regimine and I used to think she was crazy but then I started coming on here and researching and now people think Im crazy with all the new things I do now to my hair that I picked up off of here.

Okay my co-workers think I'm nuts about all my "hair challenges" and that I have virtual friends that are just as crazy in love with their hair as I am. But then we all have our crazy quirks. Right? Right!

I'm constantly giving all the ladies in my family advice and it is my mission to get everybody off the "heat horse" ---they are skeptical because they have noticed a major change not only in my hair but in my attitude toward my health and my hair.

But let me tell you I damn near have the website on hair business cards for instances when your hair is looking a hot mess and you want to know my secret.

I don't give out tips anymore. If I'm in the mood I may say just wash, deep condition once a week and moisturize daily.

I know exactly what you mean. I have several family members who are stuck to those old traditions or who choose to listen to the advice of uneducated stylist and can really use the advice we have here but I know that it won't be well accepted so my mom told me just to take care of my head and hers and let them go head on.

This is so ironic because I've been trying to think of what to say when people ask. Washing every 5 to 7 days is an alien concept. And using something other than grease:eek: .But if we tell the truth then we're the aliens:lol:

yeah from the planet of healthy thick, long hair

CG, they can't think you are too crazy when they see your hair growing and growing:). But so many people are just stuck. I got my mom to stretch her relaxers from 5 or 6 weeks to 7 or 8 (lol I know that's not stretching to LHCF) and in the past year she has seen significant growth. On her own she decided to stop coloring so much, now only does it once or twice a year and her hair looks so much healthier. So I'm happy I shared my info with her. But now that I'm natural and my youngest daughter is natural I don't tell her much because I can tell she hates or is scared of natural hair so I don't feel comfortable discussing hair with her anymore.

Same here. For the most part people don't want to hear the truth anyway. They just want to hear about some miracle product. I just tell them I wash, condition, and moisturize and keep it moving.

I don't tell people about this board anymore either. The last time I did my freind looked at me like I was crazy, so I don't mention it and most people don;t ask. Sure, they comment on how long my hair has gotten, but only one person asked me what I've been doing. She even went so far as to ask me how often do I wash my hair. I told her about twice a week. She said she knew someone else who does that and her hair grew like crazy too...but I don't think she's ready to make that commitment yet.

I think a lot of people shrug it off b/c they're not ready to make a commitment to their hair. Figuring out your moisture/protein balance; what products actually work for your hair, protective styles, styling tools, etc. And that's if they even let you get far enough to expalin all that!

(Okay...that was just my .08 cents. I'm off the soap box now:grin: )

I don't share anymore either. People just look at me like I am crazy when I say I don't grease my scalp and that I wash twice a week.

I don't talk to people about this board :nono: Sometimes I would try and they would just beat me down with "That won't work."

I feel you...now when I am on the metro, out shopping, at church and I see women with short damaged hair or bald spots, I just want to let them know that their hair is beautiful and that it can be healthy and long and give them this site...I may one day...you can get biz card for like $5 at Vista Print..I think it may be a ministry that God is placing in my heart...loving my hair has been a journey and I really want other black women to have that satisfaction and liberation of knowing that their hair is beautiful and a gift from God...

LCHF biz cards...here I come!! I think every black woman should be a member of this site...its my favorite of all the hair forums...You ladies are wonderful and a daily blessing in my life...

:lachen: Can you see us passing out LHCF cards to women with damaged hair? We'd probably get beat down!!!

But seriously, I know what you're saying. I always feel like helping sisters that I see with damaged hair. It would be wonderful if all black women knew what we on this site know. I saw this teenage girl on the train once. She was so cute, but her hair was jacked! I really wished I could have helped her. But then, sometimes I feel "called" to help the teenage girls period.

I also looove this site, and thank all you LHCF ladies for all your suggestions and tips. My hair has never felt better in my entire life!!!:notworthy
No kidding--I keep touching my hair because it's sooo soft and silky. :D

I try to limit my responses and my comments.

I've seriously have been thinking about this for a long time... Why don't LHCF or other hair boards, why don't they advertise in mags, tv/radio commercials, search engines, websites, billboards? Why don't they? Why are these hairboards a secret? Before I blindly stumbled upon LHCF, i've done a gazillion internet searches about hairproducts/care and i've never stumbled across not 1 haircare website. I seriously wonder why? Haircare is so important, it teaches us how to take care of hair that God has given us and not destroy our gift with weaves and hair grease. Hair care is not about being a hobby for the vain. It's about taking proper care of yourself, the same way you've learned the secrets to keeping your teeth clean.
I wanna get the message out D@mmit!!
I just think that this topic is too personal to rely on 'word of mouth'. I think my hair is the bomb and I would be HIGHLY OFFENDED if someone said 'pssst, go to LCHF to get haircare tips". U know? I just get sooo tired of seing 7 out of every 10 females with short thinning nappy hair. And the women who do have longish hair, it is often very thin. It really breaks me. I wanna reach out so bad.
